The Azure Data engineering team is transforming the data analytics landscape by delivering cutting-edge products such as Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our objective is to develop the data platform suited for the era of AI, powering revolutionary data-driven applications and fostering a strong data-centric culture.
Within Azure Data, our databases group is dedicated to building and maintaining Microsoft's operational database systems that handle structured data for a wide range of applications across various industries. We aim to provide developer-friendly, mission-critical, AI-enabled operational databases, spanning relational, non-relational, and open-source software offerings.
The Azure PostgreSQL team, a rapidly expanding segment of Azure Data at Microsoft, is seeking a Software Development Engineer II. The team is responsible for building and managing a globally distributed, fully managed PostgreSQL service that supports large-scale, mission-critical customer workloads. We prioritize delivering highly reliable, high-performance, and self-healing cloud systems. This position suits engineers who enjoy developing scalable cloud services, resolving complex technical challenges, and making a significant impact while expanding their expertise.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver software solutions that enhance the reliability, scalability, performance, security, and efficiency of cloud services.
- Maintain and improve services in production, including participating in scheduled on-call rotations.
- Develop and implement automation tools for production environment operations.
- Work collaboratively with global teams to meet the requirements to support enterprise-grade services.
- Actively engage in code reviews, bug triaging, and contribute to decision-making aligned with business and engineering goals.
- Influence and review ongoing service design, architecture, standards, and operational methods.
- Demonstrate and uphold Microsoft’s culture and values.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical discipline plus 2–4 years of experience in software engineering involving programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python—or equivalent practical experience.
- Ability to fulfill Microsoft, customer, and government security requirements, including passing a Microsoft Cloud background check at hiring and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Participation in code reviews, applying coding standards and best practices under guidance.
- Writing clean, testable, maintainable code for product features, utilizing AI tools responsibly.
- Assisting in solution design and testing, contributing to design documents and technical validation.
- Supporting quality assurance activities, including executing security testing and considering dependency and scalability.
- Applying security principles in code and processes, contributing to monitoring, incident response, and secure deployment.
- Engaging in reliability and support activities such as monitoring systems, supporting live site operations, telemetry integration, and incident management.
- Collaborating with stakeholders to understand user requirements and incorporate customer security and privacy considerations.
