Opportunity Overview

Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applications for the role of Service Worker I, ideal for candidates who appreciate active work in a hospital environment, possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and are able to stand or walk for extended periods while frequently lifting up to 50 lbs (or assisting to lift approximately 157.5 kgs). This role is integral to supporting patient and resident care as part of the Linen & Environmental Services (LES) team dedicated to timely, efficient portering, cleaning, and linen operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport patients, equipment, laboratory specimens, blood products, and patient charts across hospital units.
  • Maintain supply distribution by replenishing hospital resources throughout patient care areas.
  • Clean medical equipment and patient care spaces as directed, upholding safety and hygiene standards.
  • Report safety or supply concerns promptly to Unit Managers.
  • Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols and guidelines to support optimal patient experiences.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in patient portering and equipment handling within a hospital or similar healthcare setting.
  • Critical thinking, ability to prioritize and schedule tasks effectively under supervision.
  • Competence working both independently and as part of a team in fast-paced, potentially stressful environments.
  • Preferred qualifications include knowledge of hospital operations, familiarity with hospital equipment, valid WHMIS certification, basic computer skills, and experience with Connect Care systems.
  • Training in ergonomic and client handling programs such as "Move Safe" and "It's Your Move" is advantageous.
  • Preference for candidates with open availability to support diverse operational hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call shifts.

  • Location: Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, Alberta, Canada
  • Employment Type: Temporary, Full-time (1.0 FTE)
  • Shift Pattern: Nights, weekends, on-call with days off per rotation; 7.75 hours per shift; 2-week rotation cycles totaling 10 shifts.
  • Salary Range: $22.33 to $24.38 per hour
  • Benefits: Eligible for Remote Retention Allowance up to $3,000 annually (non-pensionable), paid hourly on base pay hours.
  • Vehicle: No vehicle required for this role.
