Opportunity Overview

We are seeking a skilled Senior Associate to join our expanding ANZ Construction & Infrastructure team, with a focus on establishing and developing the New Zealand construction legal practice. This role encompasses working on a diverse range of construction, infrastructure, and commercial legal matters. Our client base includes small, medium, and enterprise-scale businesses, and the goal is to deliver efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality legal services.

The New Zealand team operates fully remotely, but annual offsite meetings and events provide opportunities for in-person collaboration. Christchurch-based employees may utilize the firm’s local office or coworking facilities, and a home office setup allowance will be provided to ensure a productive remote working environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Drafting, negotiating, and reviewing various construction contracts including NZS 3910, NZS 3916, NZ 3604, Residential Building Contracts, Consultancy Agreements, and Subcontractor Agreements
• Providing advice on contract procurement strategies
• Handling contractual claims and interpreting contract terms
• Counseling clients on compliance with regulatory frameworks such as the Construction Contracts Act 2002, Building Act 2004, security of payment claims, Licensed Building Practitioner requirements, and relevant construction industry licensing and regulations
• Building and maintaining strong client relationships as their trusted legal advisor, identifying additional ways to support their business success
• Supporting team and business growth through delivering articles, webinars, and internal training sessions via the firm's 'LV Academy'

Candidate Profile

• At least 5 years of substantive experience in reputable legal settings, including in-house or private practice roles, with a focus on front-end construction and infrastructure matters; knowledge of general commercial contracts is a plus
• Strong commercial acumen and problem-solving approach
• Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and pragmatically to non-legal stakeholders
• Excellent project management capabilities, able to independently manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
• Exceptional interpersonal skills to build trust and rapport with clients and team members
• Self-motivated and capable of autonomous work, while contributing effectively to a collaborative and high-performance team
