Salary: $53.37 per hour
Location: Maryland Public Schools in Kent and St. Mary's Counties

Primary Role
The School-Based State Mathematics Coach plays a pivotal role in enhancing K-8 math instruction by providing job-embedded, non-evaluative coaching based on evidence-backed instructional practices and high-quality instructional materials (HQIM). This position helps teachers systematically deliver math lessons aligned to grade-level standards and supports the state's comprehensive math policy by fostering coherent instruction across grades.
Responsibilities
- Provide supportive, job-embedded coaching to improve math teaching consistent with Maryland's Math Policy.
- Assist teachers in delivering structured math lessons that balance conceptual understanding and procedural skills.
- Facilitate professional learning sessions focused on evidence-based math instruction and HQIM use.
- Model math teaching strategies via co-teaching, demonstrations, and side-by-side coaching.
- Carry out classroom observations and walkthroughs to offer targeted feedback.
- Help teachers use aligned assessments to identify student needs and suitable interventions.
- Lead collaborative efforts in planning math units and lessons.
- Maintain documentation on math instruction implementation utilizing state tools.
- Engage in continuous professional development on math teaching, research, and coaching.
- Work with MSDE leadership and regional coaches to align math initiatives across schools and regions.
Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree or 36 post-baccalaureate credit hours in mathematics, STEM, education, or related fields from an accredited institution. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree combined with 7 years relevant experience or a doctorate degree may substitute parts of these requirements.
Experience: Minimum four years of teaching or administrative experience related to preK-12 mathematics programs. One year of direct teaching experience within Kindergarten through 8th grade math education is required.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with K-8 math curriculum and instruction.
- Background as a math instructional coach, department chair, or administrator supporting math teaching.
- Familiarity with Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and frameworks for mathematics.
- Skill in designing, implementing, and evaluating professional learning aligned to research-based math pedagogies.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse communities and develop top-quality professional development programs.
