About The Role

Envision the creative spirit of computing pioneers from the 1970s and 80s who designed accessible technology for people new to computers. We aspire to craft software embodying timeless quality, like the precision of German cameras, the charm of Japanese toys, and the broad appeal of Coca-Cola. The challenges we face demand a product designer endowed with exceptional UX intuition, technical skill, refined taste, and a commitment to impeccable quality.

This position is based in San Francisco or New York City, with a hybrid onsite setup requiring presence on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (Anchor Days) to collaborate closely with the team.

What You Will Do

• Develop product concepts that effectively balance vision, craftsmanship, agility, and business objectives.
• Design every aspect of new product features from initial ideas to user experience and precise visual implementation.
• Lead end-to-end project execution alongside engineering teams to bring your ideas to market.
• Collaborate with Customer Experience, Sales, and Customer Success teams to gather insights about diverse user needs, guiding prioritization and roadmap planning.
• Work with Marketing to create compelling narratives across the user lifecycle, including product content, help documentation, and promotional materials.
• Invent new intuitive and practical design patterns, deliberately evolving the design system to scale as the product grows.

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum of five years of comprehensive experience managing design projects autonomously from start to finish.
• Strong dedication to understanding customer needs and advocating for the best user-centered solutions.
• Capability to resolve ambiguous, conceptual challenges and craft simple, intuitive mental models and workflows that deliver immediate user value.
• Expertise in creating clear, user-friendly, and visually engaging interfaces.
• Good business acumen with an ability to balance design elegance, speed of delivery, and strategic impact, avoiding fixation on overly complex UI or abstractions.
• Collaborative mindset; a strong listener who values diverse inputs and feedback to arrive at optimal design decisions.
• Skilled in storytelling through both textual and visual means to foster consensus and alignment across teams.
• Experience working cross-functionally with product management, engineering, research, data analytics, and fellow designers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous involvement in building high-quality tools within small teams.
• Bringing diverse perspectives and strengths that complement a collaborative team environment.
• A deep understanding of issues caused by fragmented tool ecosystems and a passion for solving these challenges.
• Familiarity with computing pioneers such as Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and Bret Victor, and an appreciation of their influence.
• Ability to code as a designer.

Compensation and Benefits

Notion offers highly competitive cash compensation, equity stakes, and benefits, with exact salary depending on factors such as location, job complexity, and candidate expertise. For San Francisco-based roles, the estimated base salary ranges between $285,000 and $330,000 annually.
