Job overview
The Principal Instrumentation Designer is expected to influence team performance, communicate instrumentation design information clearly, and work independently within established procedures and practices. In this senior design role, you will also guide others, coordinate work across the team, and suggest practical improvements to methods and workflows within the instrumentation discipline.
What you will do
- Create and develop high-quality arrangement and detail drawings for concept, FEED, study, and detailed design stages, making sure they are clear, professionally presented, and practical for construction.
- Build 3D models and verify that they remain free of clashes with other disciplines.
- Deliver design outputs in line with project specifications, MDR requirements, level 2 and level 3 procedures, agreed timelines, and budget targets.
- Organize your own workload effectively, set priorities, and—when acting as lead designer—plan and forecast resource needs.
- Direct a small or medium instrumentation design team when assigned as lead designer.
- Coordinate discipline work, manage interfaces with other engineering groups, and lead the design effort for the assigned work area.
- Plan, organize, and control discipline execution, including scope, deliverables, schedule, and manpower, in coordination with the Engineering Manager.
- Track progress and productivity, identify issues early, and take corrective action where needed.
- Serve as the main discipline contact for project discussions with the project team, customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and external agencies such as auditors and certifying bodies.
- Review the contract scope, project specifications, schedule, and inter-discipline requirements, raising concerns early and addressing them proactively.
- Submit change notifications and support variation orders when scope changes arise.
- Work with other disciplines to produce clash-free designs and gather the inputs needed for drawings and models.
- Record substantive communications and share them with discipline leadership as required.
- Support estimates for proposals and scope changes, including execution statements, schedules, manpower needs, software needs, and other project-specific inputs.
- Raise technical queries to close gaps in information, clarify scope, and maintain company procedures, standards, practices, and operational requirements.
- Help finalize deliverable lists, design philosophies, and related documentation to ensure technical completeness and compliance.
- Review project and fabrication schedules against construction sequencing, milestones, and design scope.
- Attend kickoff meetings, design reviews, vendor meetings, engineering meetings, and offshore site surveys when needed.
- Research customer standards and procedures and help prepare project-specific design procedures for approval.
- Maintain discipline drawing and document files, including final archiving.
- Prepare, review, and as lead designer approve instrumentation design outputs such as 3D model instrument scopes, layout drawings, hook-up and installation details, wiring and loop diagrams, panel and console drawings, instrument drawing lists, logic diagrams, shutdown hierarchy drawings, schematics, block diagrams, and material schedules.
- Support fabrication and construction teams in resolving design-related clashes and build issues.
- Monitor deliverables continuously and keep registers current.
- Ensure all work aligns with the Project Execution Plan and that drawings and documents are completed and archived on time.
- Keep leadership informed of progress, concerns, resource issues, and budget matters.
- Contribute to progress reporting, forecasting, productivity tracking, and recovery planning for delayed deliverables.
- Participate in design reviews, audits, and lessons-learned capture.
- Coach junior designers on procedures, standards, worksheets, calculations, software, and technical queries.
- Help maintain technical guidelines, global procedures, software, and standards.
- Support training, performance feedback, and candidate interviews when required.
- Travel to fabrication yards or construction sites to support mechanical completion, hook-up, and commissioning as needed.
- When serving as lead designer, also prepare bids, discipline budgets, execution plans, schedules, work assignments, and forecasts; review and approve project documents, schedules, estimates, reports, procedures, and check drawings; coordinate with other lead designers; and ensure team outputs meet scope, quality, budget, and schedule expectations.

This position reports to the project Lead Designer, Project Engineering Manager, or Project Manager, and functionally to the Supervising Designer or Engineering Manager. You will work closely with lead designers, engineers, other design disciplines, the project engineer, material control, document control, and customer representatives. The role also supervises the design team assigned to the project or part of the project during detailing and production.
Qualifications and experience
- A high school diploma with formal training in civil, electrical, mechanical design, or drafting in a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 10 years of experience with a major contractor or consultant, including more than 5 years primarily in oil and gas.
- Strong knowledge of industry detailing standards and codes.
- Working knowledge of 2D and/or 3D drafting and material control systems such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- At least 1 or 2 projects of experience using E3D and/or S3D.
- Ability to lead projects and coordinate execution work.
- Experience in project coordination and delivery.
- Knowledge of QA systems and strong communication skills would be an advantage.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or AutoLISP programming.
