About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Magnet Scientist to spearhead the development and manufacturing of cutting-edge magnetic materials. This role is highly hands-on and laboratory-focused, requiring active engagement in advancing the microstructure, processing methods, and performance of AI-discovered magnet alloys. You will serve as a vital link between computational materials predictions and practical execution, aiming to transform theoretical promising alloys into high-functioning magnets through meticulous control of phase formation, grain structures, and defect management.
Key Duties
- Conduct daily experimental synthesis using techniques such as physical vapor deposition, melt growth, flux growth, and arc-melting.
- Plan and implement sophisticated heat treatments, annealing sequences, and processing strategies to tailor grain size, texture, and phase distribution.
- Optimize magnet properties including coercivity, remanence, and thermal stability by engineering microstructural features.
- Develop scalable production processes moving from ingot to powder to bulk magnet forms, utilizing sintering and hot pressing methods.
- Carry out advanced X-ray structural analyses and spectroscopy to characterize materials.
- Perform magnetic measurements including hysteresis loops and temperature-dependent properties with VSM or PPMS magnetometers.
- Study magnetic domain behavior, reversal mechanisms, and anisotropy to provide scientifically informed feedback to the AI development team.
Qualifications
- PhD or MSc in Physics, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or Chemistry plus at least five years of practical experience.
- Proven expertise with synthesis and fabrication of inorganic crystal materials, notably permanent magnets or functional intermetallic compounds.
- Strong background in microstructure design and understanding the interplay between structure and physical properties.
- Skilled in magnetic characterization techniques, particularly PPMS or VSM systems.
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with rare-earth and rare-earth-free magnet materials as well as powder metallurgy processes.
- Experience using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for detailed microstructural examination.
- Track record in generating materials data supporting patent filings and industrial qualification.
