Overview
The Machining Engineer contributes to planning, designing, procuring, and implementing machining processes and equipment within an industrial manufacturing setting. This role collaborates closely with engineering teams to optimize manufacturing operations and equipment usage.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in identifying required parts and tooling to meet manufacturing objectives such as setup reduction and process changeovers aligned with product specifications.
- Partner with engineering to diagnose and resolve product and equipment performance issues, proposing improvements or enhancements.
- Support the design, development, and evaluation of technical products and manufacturing systems to ensure quality and operational efficiency.
- Conduct engineering assessments of equipment designs and recommend modifications to elevate product quality and process procedures.
- Utilize continuous improvement methodologies to boost equipment availability and capability across functional teams.

- Select tooling effectively for material removal processes to meet product requirements with cost efficiency.
- Design measurement systems compliant with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and measurement technologies for quality assurance.
Education & Licensing
A college degree or equivalent experience in STEM fields or related areas is required. Position may require compliance-related licenses.
Experience
Candidates should possess at least entry-level relevant experience in machining operations. The role involves managing machining shift operations to meet production, quality, machine availability, and safety benchmarks.
Technical Duties
- Manage daily production planning and achieve shift-wise production targets.
- Ensure machining operations including CNC turning, milling, grinding, and drilling proceed as scheduled.
- Optimize manpower and machine workloads to maximize output.
- Monitor and analyze cycle times to identify and mitigate productivity losses.
- Ensure strict adherence to standard work and process instructions.
- Oversee CNC machine setups, tooling adjustments, and verify program functionality.
- Assist operators and setup personnel with troubleshooting machining challenges.
- Review and adjust cutting parameters to enhance productivity and tool longevity.
- Validate machine capabilities against process requirements.
- Monitor critical-to-quality factors and oversee first-off, in-process, and final inspections.
- Ensure compliance with GD&T, blueprints, and control plans, driving corrective actions as needed.
- Lead process improvement efforts using root cause analysis tools such as 5 Why, Fishbone diagrams, Pareto analysis, and A3 problem solving.
- Implement lean manufacturing and Kaizen initiatives including SMED to reduce setup times.
- Maintain equipment reliability through preventive and autonomous maintenance coordination and support TPM and OEE improvement efforts.
- Manage tooling including wear monitoring, consumption control, inventory management, and collaboration with suppliers for enhancements.
- Conduct shift safety meetings, promote adherence to EHS standards including LOTO and machine guarding, and investigate safety incidents to foster a zero-incident culture.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in CNC Turning and Vertical/Horizontal Machining Centers.
- Knowledge of grinding, drilling, tapping operations, and fixture design concepts.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), MES systems, and production scheduling.
- Familiarity with quality tools such as GD&T interpretation, Statistical Process Control, Measurement System Analysis, PFMEA, control plans, and 8D problem solving.
- Application of lean manufacturing tools including TPM, SMED, 5S, Kaizen, value stream mapping, waste elimination, and visual management.
Performance Indicators
- Safety: Zero lost time incidents, effective near miss closure, high safety audit scores.
- Delivery: Achievement of shift production targets, on-time delivery, adherence to schedules.
- Quality: Defect rates such as PPM, scrap, rework, and first pass yield.
- Productivity: Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), machine utilization, labor productivity, cycle time adherence.
- Cost: Management of tool consumption, overtime, scrap, and manufacturing costs per unit.
