About NASTAD

NASTAD is a prominent non-profit, non-partisan organization representing public health officials responsible for HIV and hepatitis programs across the United States, including all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, seven local jurisdictions, and Pacific Island jurisdictions. Its mission is to enhance the health and dignity of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and overlapping epidemics by bolstering public health systems and engaging community partnerships. Position Overview

The Legal Research Intern will work under the supervision of the Manager of Legal Research within the Policy and Legislative Affairs team. This internship offers remote work with the flexibility to participate in-person or hybrid arrangements based in Washington, D.C., during Eastern Time working hours. The role involves supporting the implementation of key activities related to health systems legal and policy initiatives, emphasizing HIV and hepatitis public health issues.

Key Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive statutory and regulatory research on HIV and hepatitis-related policy and legislation.
Contribute to the creation of resources, reports, toolkits, and similar materials derived from legal research findings.
Maintain and update existing statutory and regulatory research documents to ensure current and accurate information.
Manage updates to NASTAD’s comprehensive 50-state jurisdictional analysis focusing on HIV data privacy and transmission laws.
Execute additional projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment while attending to details.
Excellent research, writing, and communication capabilities.
Self-motivated with the capacity to work independently.
Proficiency with legal research platforms, particularly Westlaw.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications.

Experience and Education Requirements

Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher, or equivalent educational or experiential combinations demonstrating capability to perform job functions.
Completion of at least one year of law school and active pursuit of a Juris Doctorate degree.
Successful completion of a Legal Research and Writing course during the Juris Doctorate program.
Preferably, prior experience as a legal intern or employment in a legal office setting.

Additional Information

Compensation is $20.00 per hour.
Work schedule is limited to a maximum of 20 hours weekly from September through December.
Remote work is an option, with willingness to travel if necessary.
