Highways Engineer

Role overview

A local authority in North London is looking for an experienced Highways Engineer to support its Planned Maintenance Team. This contract/interim opportunity is suited to a highways specialist who has successfully delivered maintenance and footway renewal work in a busy urban setting.

The position is based in Enfield within the South East region and offers £28.50 per hour on an umbrella basis. You will oversee planned highway maintenance schemes from early survey and design stages through to final completion, bringing together technical delivery, project coordination, budgeting, and contract administration.

Key responsibilities

• Lead highway maintenance projects from the first survey and design steps through to construction and handover.
• Carry out highway inspections, condition checks, and site evaluations.
• Deliver several footway renewal schemes at the same time.
• Produce technical drawings, specifications, estimates, and other project paperwork.
• Track project budgets and maintain strong financial control for each scheme.
• Oversee contractors on site and check the standard of completed work.
• Handle contract administration while ensuring work complies with required standards, specifications, and health and safety rules.
• Work with internal teams, contractors, stakeholders, and members of the public throughout delivery.
• Offer technical guidance and practical recommendations for highway maintenance and improvement projects.

Requirements

• HNC, BSc, or BEng in Civil Engineering or a related field, or equivalent knowledge gained through experience.
• Demonstrable background in delivering highway maintenance and footway renewal schemes.
• Sound understanding of highway engineering, project delivery, contract administration, and site supervision.
• Experience controlling budgets and managing scheme expenditure.
• Comfort working across more than one project at the same time.
• Awareness of relevant highways legislation, standards, and current industry best practice.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to manage relationships with different stakeholders.
