Handyman (Multi Skilled)

Position Overview

We are seeking a versatile Handyman skilled in multiple maintenance disciplines to join our team. This role involves conducting general repairs, maintaining building facilities, and supporting electrical and HVAC systems within a commercial environment.

Primary Responsibilities

• Execute routine repairs and upkeep across the facility including plumbing, carpentry, painting, and structural repairs.
• Restore and maintain furniture, fixtures, and fittings as required.
• Promptly respond to maintenance requests and breakdowns, ensuring all work areas remain clean, safe, and orderly after tasks.
• Keep tools and workshop environments in proper working condition.
• Perform basic electrical inspections on lighting, switches, plugs, and related equipment; identify faults that require specialist electricians.
• Carry out fundamental checks on HVAC and air-conditioning units to detect issues such as airflow problems, temperature inaccuracies, leaks, unusual sounds, or equipment malfunctions.
• Collaborate with contractors during maintenance activities, providing necessary support and following up on unresolved faults.
• Complete scheduled planned and preventative maintenance tasks and building inspections, addressing minor issues proactively and escalating major concerns appropriately.
• Manage work orders diligently, updating records thoroughly, noting any further work needed, and escalating contractor requirements when applicable.
• Supervise and escort contractors on-site, ensuring compliance with safety standards and verifying quality of completed work.
• Adhere strictly to Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) policies, using correct PPE and reporting unsafe conditions immediately.
• Provide professional, timely service to clients and building occupants to minimize disruption and maintain strong communication throughout maintenance projects.
• Maintain precise documentation including maintenance records, inspection checklists, recurring issues, and support reporting efforts.

Required Skills and Competencies

• Proficiency in general building maintenance and repair methods.
• Basic understanding of electrical systems and HVAC/air-conditioning operations.
• Capable of diagnosing maintenance issues and distinguishing when specialist intervention is necessary.
• Competency in plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general property repairs.
• Safe handling of both hand and power tools.
• Effective maintenance inspection techniques.
• Strong awareness and observance of SHEQ standards.
• Experience with work order systems and maintenance reporting.
• Excellent customer service and communication capabilities.
• Strong time management and task prioritization skills.
• Ability to work independently and take responsibility for assigned tasks.

Qualifications and Experience

• Matriculation (Grade 12) is mandatory.
• Technical and general maintenance training is beneficial.
• Basic knowledge of building services and maintenance is expected.
• An NQF Level 4 Technical Qualification is advantageous.
• Between two and five years of practical experience in a handyman or maintenance role.
• Experience in commercial, corporate, property management, or facilities management environments is preferred.
• Hands-on expertise in general building maintenance, basic electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and related repairs.
