Role Overview
We are looking for a seasoned General Manager to oversee all aspects of our Shipping Agency specializing in Container Line operations based in Qatar. This senior leadership position entails full responsibility for profit and loss while managing comprehensive business functions including commercial management, operational execution, customer service, agency oversight, finance, compliance, and strategic expansion efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the regional Shipping Agency business with complete P&L accountability.
- Formulate and implement strategies aimed at increasing revenue, enhancing profitability, expanding market share, and driving operational excellence.
- Oversee commercial, operational, and financial activities to improve overall business results.
- Draft and manage annual business plans, budgets, forecasts, and performance reviews, ensuring key financial and operational targets are achieved.
- Direct end-to-end agency operations, including vessel agency services, container logistics, customer service, and documentation processes.
- Coordinate with ports, customs, terminals, transport providers, and government bodies to ensure smooth operations.
- Promote operational efficiencies and quality standards while maintaining compliance with maritime regulations and company policies.
- Craft and execute commercial initiatives to boost market presence and profitability, including customer acquisition and retention strategies.
- Develop and nurture strategic relationships with container line principals, shipping companies, freight forwarders, and logistics providers.
- Lead contractual negotiations, tendering, and partnership development to foster growth.
- Identify and capitalize on new trade routes, shipping segments, and business opportunities.
- Manage customer relationships to guarantee excellent service experience and resolve escalations promptly.
- Optimize vessel turnaround, cargo handling, container movements, and equipment utilization to enhance operational performance and reduce costs.
- Provide strong leadership that mentors and develops multi-disciplinary teams across commercial, operations, customer service, finance, and admin functions.
- Create a collaborative, high-achieving and customer-centric organizational atmosphere.
- Implement employee engagement, succession planning, and performance management practices.
- Maintain rigorous financial controls, budget oversight, receivables management, and risk mitigation.
- Ensure strict adherence to regulatory compliance, contract governance, and business continuity frameworks.
- Analyze industry trends, competitor behavior, and market demands to inform strategic planning and propose innovative growth strategies.
- Champion digital transformation and operational excellence initiatives regionally.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain, Maritime Studies, or a related field.
- Advanced qualifications such as an MBA or Master’s degree are preferred.
- At least 25 years of progressive experience in Shipping Agency, Container Line, or Liner Shipping sectors.
- Minimum 8 to 10 years in senior leadership positions managing regional operations.
- Previous engagement with globally recognized Container Line or Liner Shipping firms.
- Experience within Middle East, Asia, or African markets is considered a strong asset.
