Fleet Maintenance Director

Role Overview

The Fleet Maintenance Director is responsible for ensuring the mechanical health, operational uptime, and maintenance performance of Turbo's extensive terminal tractor fleet, comprising around 500 heavy-duty leased and rental units throughout approximately 26 states. This leadership role demands a hands-on approach managing equipment servicing, preventative maintenance program creation and enforcement, compliance with safety and regulations, vendor management, breakdown call center operations, and oversight of an in-house mobile technician team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and refine a comprehensive preventative maintenance program including scheduling, inspection standards, and service intervals tailored to unit types and usage.
• Ensure adherence to preventive maintenance schedules and maintain detailed documentation within company systems.
• Set and enforce equipment condition standards, repair strategies, and repair quality, applying these consistently for internal technicians and external vendors.
• Analyze and proactively reduce breakdowns by identifying failure patterns and addressing root causes.
• Maintain comprehensive maintenance records covering history, inspections, warranties, and repairs for every unit.
• Manage full compliance across multi-state operations including inspections, federal and state regulations, emissions, and customer site safety standards.
• Keep audit-ready documentation current and enforce shop and mobile technician safety protocols and incident reporting.
• Establish vendor network strategies, selecting, onboarding, negotiating terms, and monitoring performance through objective scorecards, replacing underperforming partners as necessary.
• Operate the Breakdown / Call Center through dedicated management to ensure effective triage, dispatch, and service delivery with established service level agreements.
• Oversee the mobile technician team managing coverage, territories, scheduling, parts inventory, and technician productivity metrics including first-time fix rates.
• Lead continuous data-driven decisions using maintenance analytics, producing dashboards and reports on key metrics such as breakdown frequency, repair times, warranty recovery, and vendor performance.
• Drive process standardization and operational excellence to support scaling the fleet beyond the current size, eliminating waste and documenting workflows.
• Provide leadership to a team of 10 including direct management of two managers, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement aligned with business growth.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of progressive experience managing heavy-duty fleet maintenance or equipment service operations.
• At least 3 years leading teams involving technicians, service coordinators, or call center personnel.
• Proven expertise in designing and managing large-scale preventative maintenance programs across multiple locations.
• Experienced in vendor selection, negotiation, performance management, and service level enforcement.
• Knowledge of regulatory compliance, safety standards, and audit documentation requirements specific to fleet operations.
• Strong skills in data analytics with capability to build and interpret KPIs and operational dashboards using fleet management and business intelligence systems.
• Track record of driving process improvements and establishing scalable workflows supporting rapid organizational growth.
• Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and executive reporting.
• Willingness to travel as necessary across the multi-state fleet footprint.

Preferred Experience and Certifications

• Prior work with terminal tractors, yard equipment, or heavy commercial vehicles maintenance.
• Experience managing breakdown dispatch centers and after-hours service coverage.
• Knowledge of mobile technician deployment and territory management.
• Familiarity with Karmak, Decisiv, or similar fleet management platforms.
• Technical certifications or hands-on mechanical experience (ASE certifications, diesel or heavy equipment training) enhancing credibility with technical staff and vendors.
