Facilities Custodian

Overview

The Town of Tillsonburg is seeking a motivated Facilities Custodian to support daily operations primarily at the Tillsonburg Community Centre. This full-time role involves managing housekeeping and maintenance duties within Town facilities, including indoor cleaning tasks, outdoor litter removal, and horticultural activities. The custodian will also assist with event setups, maintenance during special events, and interact with the public to provide assistance and ensure compliance with regulations.

Job Responsibilities

• Execute daily and weekly cleaning and maintenance tasks such as sweeping, mopping, disinfecting, dusting, spot cleaning, and minor equipment repairs inside and outside town facilities.
• Prepare and dismantle rooms and activity areas for various events.
• Collect and remove litter from facility areas.
• Support the onboarding and training of new custodial staff members.
• Engage with the public and user groups to facilitate rentals and monitor events for adherence to safety and workplace regulations.
• Contribute to facility shutdown activities during summer as per schedules.
• Maintain detailed logs of tasks performed and necessary records.
• Follow all emergency procedures, safely handle chemicals, and administer first aid within certified competency.
• Comply fully with the Ontario Health and Safety Act and organizational policies to maintain workplace safety.
• Provide practical recommendations to address operational challenges and procedural improvements.
• Flexibly operate under changing work conditions and occasionally work independently.
• Carry out horticultural duties including planting, weeding, and maintenance of flowerbeds.
• Provide maintenance and cleaning services at other Town facilities as assigned, such as the Cemetery Office and Museum.
• Perform additional duties as directed by supervisors.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 education or equivalent.
• Valid Standard First Aid certification.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer skills.
• Certification or willingness to obtain ORFA Recreation Facility Cleaning, Disinfection and Sanitization Principles.
• Strong problem-solving capabilities and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
• Possession of a valid class 'G' driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Effective communication skills.
• Prior experience in facility housekeeping within an institutional context.
• Ability to lift loads of up to 50 pounds.
