About the Role
The Environmentalist position at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon, Georgia, involves maintaining cleanliness and hygiene across hospital patient care areas. This role contributes to the first impressions patients receive by ensuring high standards of sanitation and upkeep.
Primary Duties
- Maintaining the visual appearance of assigned patient units daily, including high dusting, baseboard and handrail cleaning, corridor touch-ups, polishing stainless steel surfaces, and notifying supervisors of maintenance needs.
- Performing routine cleaning of patient rooms such as changing can liners, mopping floors, restroom cleaning, dusting, furniture wiping, and disinfecting high-contact surfaces.
- Efficiently sanitizing rooms after patient discharge, including thorough dusting, bed making, cleaning ceramic fixtures, replenishing supplies (Patient Guide, Environmental Services card, Gideon Bible), mopping and baseboard scrubbing, refuse container maintenance, and sharps box emptying.
- Promptly responding to soiled beds using Bed Tracking software to facilitate patient turnover in clinical areas.
- Replenishing supplies in patient and public areas thoughtfully and responsibly to avoid unnecessary usage.
- Completing morning tasks such as cleaning common areas, including restrooms, elevator lobbies, nurses’ stations, break rooms, and routine carpet vacuuming.
- Adhering to Infection Control Department guidelines when cleaning isolation rooms.
- Cleaning ancillary spaces like trash rooms, utility closets, medication and supply rooms, and ensuring offices are free of dust when personal items are removed.
- Participating in shift, supervisory, and departmental meetings to stay informed about procedural changes and the hospital’s strategic priorities.
- Identifying and reporting unsafe conditions, repair needs, and additional floor maintenance requirements to supervisors or facilities management.
- Delivering excellent customer service in all interactions with patients, visitors, and staff, understanding the impact on patient satisfaction metrics.
- Flexibility to be reassigned to different hospital areas as needed to support overall department requirements.
Qualifications
No formal education or prior experience is required for this position. Licenses or certifications are not mandatory.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The role requires visual acuity for near and far tasks, verbal communication skills, and the physical capability to assist with moves, transport supplies, and utilize good ergonomic techniques. Candidates must have functional mobility to perform tasks involving reaching, bending, squatting, kneeling, and lifting between 25-60 pounds. The role frequently involves working in noisy and busy environments with potential exposure to unpleasant odors. Ability to manage stress and multitask effectively is essential. Certain classification levels require passing a cardiac recovery test.
