Job description

About the Role

Join Arlo Training Management Software as an Engineering Manager based in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. Arlo's platform supports customers across more than 70 countries, having processed $3 billion in course transactions and assisted in training over 7.5 million individuals. This is an opportunity to lead a dynamic engineering team of 5-10 members, managing delivery from start to finish while maintaining hands-on technical involvement to guide architecture and solve complex challenges. We foster a culture centered on clarity, ownership, and curiosity, valuing constructive dialogue to achieve the best results. This position is ideal for someone passionate about leading engineers beyond just administrative tasks or ticket management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee your team's delivery by effectively planning and prioritizing tasks to meet commitments with a focus on quality, facilitating agile events with a practical, outcome-oriented approach.
  • Define and steer the technical roadmap balancing new features, technical debt, security, and quality considerations and decide when structural improvements are necessary.
  • Manage incident responses for your team's systems, conducting blameless root cause analyses to prevent recurrence of issues.
  • Lead and support your team members through regular one-on-one meetings, constructive feedback, personal development plans, recruitment, and onboarding.
  • Create and maintain a psychologically safe work atmosphere where engineers can thrive and are motivated to remain with the company.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and other stakeholders by translating high-level roadmap priorities into technical plans, communicating progress transparently including risks and trade-offs.
  • Eliminate obstacles for your team and represent their work in comprehensive engineering and business strategy forums.
  • Monitor important metrics such as cycle time, deployment frequency, and incident rates, using data to drive meaningful improvements rather than just reporting.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 5 years of practical software engineering experience, including a minimum of 2 years in a managerial role with direct reports.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering software projects timely as a team, with examples of making corrective actions when delivery was threatened.
  • Experience managing agile or scrum delivery processes within a product engineering environment.
  • Strong enough technical background to review and influence architectural decisions within your team’s area, even if not the top coder in the group.
  • Proficient understanding of modern software delivery practices such as continuous integration/deployment, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps to engage confidently in technical discussions.
  • Excellent judgment balancing team leadership and delivery accountability, with the ability to confidently push back when necessary.
