Data Scientist

Overview

This opportunity is available within the Department of Health and Human Services at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) based in Hyattsville, MD. The position contributes towards the mission of protecting public health and impacting communities at local, state, and national levels.

Job Summary

The Data Scientist will develop and apply advanced analytical and statistical techniques to assess program effectiveness and support strategic decisions. The role involves handling complex datasets including surveys and monitoring data, maintaining data integrity and compliance with federal guidelines, and collaborating across teams to deliver scalable data-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and deploy predictive models and advanced analytics to evaluate program performance and identify important trends.
• Analyze large and complex datasets ensuring data quality, confidentiality, and adherence to federal regulations.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to utilize machine learning, data science, and statistical methods for program enhancement.
• Present data insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences including senior leadership through visualizations and detailed reports.

Qualifications and Experience

• Must possess a bachelor's or higher degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or a closely related area.
• Alternatively, equivalent education combining coursework (at least 30 semester hours in related subjects) and relevant professional experience is acceptable.
• At least one year of specialized experience at a level comparable to GS-13 within the federal system involving the responsibilities listed above.
• Experience should be thoroughly described with specific dates and weekly hours for part-time roles to enable proper qualification review.
• Both paid and volunteer experience that enhances key competencies will be credited if well-documented.
