Job description
Position Overview
The University of Southern Mississippi seeks qualified candidates for the Custodian II role based at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Mississippi. This full-time staff position requires dedicated custodial services, focusing on cleaning and maintaining assigned campus buildings and facilities.
Job Duties
- Perform thorough cleaning of designated buildings within assigned timeframes utilizing appropriate cleaning materials and techniques.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and care for floors; clean whiteboards, windows, walls, blinds, grills, and glass doors; empty trash receptacles.
- Support event preparation and cleanup activities as needed.
- Dust general areas, replenish supplies, clean restrooms and drinking fountains; maintain cleanliness of entrances, plazas, and walkways.
- Assist with upkeep and maintenance of custodial and event-related equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffing and floor machines, pressure washers, tents, podiums, tables, and chairs.
- Participate in on-call duties, night shifts, and weekend work as assigned.
- Report any damages to structures or equipment to supervisors promptly.
- Act as essential personnel for Physical Plant during emergencies, contributing to preparation and recovery efforts as directed.
- Carry out other assigned tasks as necessary.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three years custodial or related experience.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Eligibility to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card upon hire.
- Ability to interpret instruction manuals and chemical safety labels effectively.
- Good communication skills to interact with a diverse community.
- Competency operating carpet extraction machines, automatic floor scrubbers, buffers, and burnishers.
- Experience applying and removing floor strippers and waxing floors with multiple coats.
- Capacity to work independently and willingness to work nights and weekends when required.
- Ability to comprehend cleaning chemical differences and attend relevant training programs.
Preferred Experience: Five years in custodial roles with experience in floor care equipment operation.
Additional Information
Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship; the university will not sponsor work visas. The position is grant-funded, with a pay grade of N02 and a salary rate of $12.71 per hour. The posting remains open until filled.
