Role Overview

The Controller plays a pivotal leadership role, managing a team of Accounting Managers, bookkeepers, and a portfolio of clients. This position demands exceptional communication abilities and keen business understanding alongside advanced accounting knowledge. The Controller ensures the prompt and accurate delivery of weekly and monthly financial reports, acts as the escalation contact, strategic advisor, and collaborative partner for clients. Quality control of all financial data and deliverables rests heavily on this function. The ideal candidate brings proven leadership experience, familiarity with a multi-client setting, expertise in e-commerce, and a technology-forward mindset focused on automation and efficiency improvements through advanced tools including AI.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage month-end close processes and all essential accounting operations for the team.
• Review financial management reports and key performance metrics.
• Ensure comprehensive reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts and conduct trend analysis for balance sheets and profit & loss statements.
• Oversee inventory management processes including physical and general ledger reconciliation, inventory write-offs, obsolescence adjustments, and verification of product costing accuracy within inventory management systems.
• Audit accounts receivable processing and aging, excluding collection activities.
• Review accounts payable procedures and aging reports, including bill payments managed through Bill.com or similar platforms.
• Supervise payroll processing alongside journal entries and accruals.
• Generate ad hoc reports as requested.
• Deliver dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs) to clients.
• Assist clients in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for finance and accounting best practices.
• Educate clients on financial status, provide problem-solving advice, and act as a strategic partner.
• Manage client communications and act as escalation contact.
• Lead, train, and supervise the accounting team on both client-facing and administrative responsibilities.
• Create and update SOPs and training materials; contribute strategic input internally.
• Lead team training sessions.
• Drive initiatives to improve efficiency through automation and AI integration.
• Oversee budgetary responsibilities for the team.
• Maintain organized documentation and secure file storage.

Candidate Qualifications

• At least 7 years of experience in full-cycle accounting.
• Minimum 2 years managing multiple clients or consulting engagements.
• Minimum 2 years leading teams.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent is required.
• Proficient in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and advanced Excel skills.
• Experience with NetSuite and Xero is a strong plus.
• Background working with e-commerce clients is mandatory.
• Familiar with e-commerce technology platforms such as Shopify, Amazon, PayPal, and Bill.com.
• Preferred experience with wholesale and retail commerce platforms like SPS Commerce and Target.
• Deep understanding of GAAP and accounting principles.
• Experience in audit and/or due diligence support is highly desirable.
• Strong financial statement literacy and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication, time management, and ability to work effectively in a remote context.
• A proactive, collaborative team player attitude is essential.
