Job Overview
Join Lewisham Council's cleaning team and contribute to supporting its vibrant and diverse community. As the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, Lewisham takes pride in championing refugee and migrant rights and is offering the role of a Relief Cleaning Operative to work across various council premises.
Role Details
You will serve as a Relief Cleaning Operative, working alongside a small team to maintain cleanliness at corporate offices, parks, children’s centers, and other council facilities. The role requires flexibility, the ability to work without supervision, and mobility around the borough at short notice. A valid driver’s license is essential, along with the physical ability to complete assigned cleaning duties.
Working Hours & Location
Locations will vary but primarily be based at Laurence House, Catford, London, SE6 4RY. The cleaning service operates between 6:00 and 20:00, with a rotating schedule covering shifts of 06:00–14:00, 09:00–17:00, and 12:00–20:00.

- Reliable and diligent worker
- Effective communicator with strong organizational skills
- Flexible and able to work within a roster system
- Capable of timely travel across the borough including at short notice
- Detail-oriented with strong time management
- Able to perform both independently and collaboratively in a team
Special Conditions
- Employment contingent upon eligibility to work in the UK (valid passport or equivalent documentation)
- Must be able to fulfill all duties outlined in the job description
- Role subject to satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
- Flexibility for short notice work assignments
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range is from £31,086 to £31,530 annually, typically starting at the minimum point of the pay grade, with consideration for current salary within the scale.
