Position Overview
The role involves managing the calculation, issuance, negotiation, and resolution of demurrage claims, ancillary expenses related to ship owners, and contractual demurrage on oil sales and purchase agreements. This position aims to reduce financial risks and enhance commercial results through efficient and accurate claims handling and settlement.
Key Duties
- Analyze charter party agreements, sales/purchase contracts, terminal clauses to determine demurrage liabilities.
- Prepare and calculate claims by reviewing voyage documentation such as laytime statements, NORs, SOFs, and pumping logs, to validate or challenge claims.
- Conduct negotiations on claims and settlements with third parties including ship owners, oil companies, traders, and terminal representatives in alignment with contract terms.
- Maintain and reconcile the demurrage ledger, ensuring data accuracy within internal systems.
- Collaborate closely with internal departments including trading, operations, legal, finance, and shipping to keep stakeholders informed on claims status and achieve fair and prompt settlements.
- Issue counterclaims or dispute unfounded claims in partnership with legal and commercial teams.
- Monitor operational events and delays to identify potential claims at an early stage.
- Support audit activities by supplying thorough claim documentation and history.
- Manage claim registers and monitor performance indicators such as settlement times, dispute success rates, and aging of open claims.
- Ensure adherence to insurance provisions, company risk policies, and relevant regulations.
- Contribute to improvements in claim processes and the development of automation initiatives.
- Assist in pre-fixture risk assessments by analyzing historical demurrage and claims exposure related to specific routes, vessels, or terminals.
- Support insurance renewal processes via provision of loss histories and claim-related analytics.
- Train junior personnel and participate in knowledge sharing within the claims or risk teams.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master's degree in Maritime Studies, Legal, Business, or Economics.
- 5 to 6 years of professional experience in demurrage and claims management.
- Strong knowledge of laytime calculations, legal principles, and maritime industry standards.
- Proven track record in negotiating with external partners.
- Familiar with claims handling, shipping operations, and trade systems.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and document management tools.
