Role Overview

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) role is a full-time, onsite position based in Nairobi. The CTO is charged with defining and driving the company’s overarching technological vision and strategy. This leadership position entails overseeing software engineering teams, guiding architectural direction, and ensuring that products and platforms are secure, scalable, and aligned with client requirements and market trends. The role covers the entire product development lifecycle including discovery, design, implementation, deployment, and continuous enhancement.

Key Duties

• Lead and manage software engineering teams and architectural decisions.
• Ensure security, scalability, and alignment of products with market and client needs.
• Direct product lifecycle activities from technical design through deployment and optimization.
• Collaborate with executive leadership, product, and business units to prioritize projects and manage resources and budgets.
• Mentor technical personnel and establish development standards, coding best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Assess and integrate new tools, technologies, and development methodologies.

Required Qualifications and Expertise

• Extensive experience in software development and architecture, particularly scalable web, mobile, and cloud-based applications.
• Strong background in IT strategy formulation and product roadmap creation that reflects business objectives.
• Proven project management skills, including leading cross-disciplinary teams and delivering complex projects on time.
• Familiarity with modern tech stacks such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, cloud services, APIs, and database systems, along with DevOps practices.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, networking, and best practices for maintaining secure production environments.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineering teams, promoting clean code, thorough testing, documentation, and ongoing learning.
• Excellent communication skills for engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or related field; advanced degrees or leadership experience are a plus.
• Experience in African markets or with emerging businesses in the region is an advantage.
