Work Schedule and Location

This full-time role operates Monday through Friday during standard business hours with some flexibility. The position is 100% remote from Orlando, Florida.

Role Overview and Key Responsibilities

  • Identify reportable and non-reportable cancer registry cases following federal, state, and national standards, ensuring accurate coding and documentation of non-reportable instances in compliance with regulations.
  • Analyze patient medical records to classify cases as analytical or non-analytic for further abstracting by the team.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of medical terminology related to anatomy, physiology, oncology, pathology, radiology, and treatment to interpret diverse patient documentation, including radiology and pathology reports, operative notes, histories, physician and nursing documentation, discharge summaries, treatment protocols, and letters.
  • Maintain professionalism and create a work environment conducive to accuracy and productivity goals.
  • Effectively prioritize multiple tasks to meet registry deadlines.
  • Stay informed on current developments, research, and trends in cancer registry and national clinical guidelines to sustain clinical expertise.
  • Participate in educational sessions, conferences, and training relevant to the registry field.
  • Collaborate with the Case Acquisition Lead to ascertain case classifications accurately.
  • Adhere strictly to hospital policies safeguarding patient confidentiality under HIPAA regulations.
  • Engage in special projects designed to enhance patient quality and outcomes within the Cancer Institute.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support department objectives.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of ACOS/COC and state registry data collection mandates with ability to decipher medical records including operative, pathology, radiology, laboratory, and autopsy reports.
  • Experience using coding manuals and rules like SEER Solid Tumor Multiple Primary and Histology rules, SEER Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Coding Manual, SEERRX Drug Database, Commission on Cancer's STORE Manual, and Florida Cancer Data System acquisition guidelines.
  • In-depth understanding of oncologic disease processes, diagnostic techniques, and care continuum documentation.
  • Familiarity with data abstraction principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Strong grasp of cancer types, progression, prognosis, and accepted treatment standards.
  • Good judgment in task prioritization to fulfill department goals and deadlines.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Effective communicator capable of engaging with leadership and team members.
  • Experience with electronic medical records, cancer registry software, word processing, and Windows operating systems.

Educational and Experience Requirements

  • At minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • An associate degree in a technical or electronics-related field or equivalent military training is preferred.
  • Preferred but not mandatory: Over two years of healthcare or related experience.
  • Preferred certification: Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).
