Overview
We are looking for an API Product Manager with 1 to 3 years of experience in product management, specifically managing API products. In this role, you will be responsible for optimizing the developer experience across all our API offerings. This includes the entire lifecycle from discovery and access to onboarding, testing, production rollout, and ongoing adoption. This position is a full-time individual contributor role based in South San Francisco with a hybrid onsite requirement.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the complete developer onboarding process and self-service integration workflows for external developers, enterprise clients, data partners, and internal users. This encompasses managing access requests, credentials, authentication, first successful API calls, testing, production readiness, launch, and sustained usage.
- Develop and maintain the API product roadmap, strategy, and prioritized backlog, balancing customer value, business impact, technical feasibility, reliability, and risk.
- Create, update, and enhance API documentation, quick-start guides, tutorials, sample codes, reference materials, FAQs, release notes, changelogs, and migration instructions.
- Collaborate with Engineering to provide and sustain sandbox environments, mock services, test data, API explorers, and other self-service tools for integration and validation.
- Set and enforce API product standards regarding resource naming, schema design, authentication, pagination, rate limiting, idempotency, versioning, backward compatibility, deprecation policies, and error handling.
- Embed documentation, developer usability, and error handling reviews into product development and release workflows to uphold API consistency and documentation completeness.
- Monitor developer experience and product usage metrics such as onboarding completion rates, error patterns, support tickets, retention, and Net Promoter Scores to detect friction points and prioritize enhancements.
- Analyze support tickets, developer feedback, documentation searches, usage trends, and failure reports to identify issues, improve the product, and lower support costs.
- Conduct usability testing and research with external developers, enterprise clients, data partners, and internal API users; translate insights into precise requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Coordinate API releases and updates across multiple functions including Engineering, Support, Customer Success, Sales, Marketing, Security, and Compliance, ensuring effective communication and migration readiness.
- Act as the advocate for external developers, enterprise customers, data partners, and internal API consumers, communicating product decisions, compromises, risks, and progress to leadership and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree is required.
- 1 to 3 years of experience in product management with direct involvement in API product management.
- Demonstrated ownership or influence over API products, platform capabilities, developer onboarding, self-service integration, API documentation, sandbox environments, or similar developer workflows.
- Strong ability to translate customer, partner, and developer feedback into product strategies, roadmaps, detailed requirements, and prioritized execution plans.
- Understanding of API lifecycle management including quality factors such as consistency, version control, backward compatibility, reliability, security, privacy, and error response handling.
- Excellent written communication and information design skills to clarify complex technical concepts effectively.
- Proven experience in cross-functional leadership, stakeholder collaboration, and decision-making within Agile development environments.
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with developer portals, API documentation tools, sandbox environments, or related developer experience products.
- Experience managing complex B2B, partner, or data provider integrations.
- Background supporting API products serving diverse audiences including external developers, enterprise clients, data partners, and internal teams.
- Previous collaboration with Product Operations, Customer Success, Support, or Solutions Engineering teams.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range of $135,000 to $145,000.
- Comprehensive benefits including 401(k) with up to 7% matching, flexible time off, 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision, and wellness programs.
