Our projects are developed in collaboration with universities, museums, educational institutions, municipalities, and industrial firms, linking cutting-edge technologies with practical applications in education, research, culture, and industry.

Currently, we are seeking an AI Application Developer with expertise in technical project management for an interdisciplinary development initiative in partnership with the Makerspace of Ruhr-University Bochum.

Role Overview

Within this AI and sustainability-focused project, you will design an intelligent system that automatically identifies objects and materials using cameras and provides information for their reuse or recycling. The position involves working at the confluence of AI, software development, camera technology, and hardware integration. In addition to software development, you will manage project planning, coordination, and documentation.

The goal is to build a fully operational solution connecting data acquisition, AI models, database, and user interface, deployable under real-world conditions.

Primary Responsibilities

Develop, train, and assess AI models specialized in computer vision and object identification.
Create, preprocess, annotate, and ensure the quality of image datasets.
Enhance the accuracy and robustness of AI detection models.
Develop a web-based application to visualize and manage detected objects and materials.
Develop or integrate suitable databases for data storage.
Build and implement APIs and other interfacing components.
Integrate AI models within an operational system architecture.
Improve system performance, stability, and real-time processing capabilities.
Produce technical documentation for developed components.

Design and construct a camera and sensor system for data capturing.
Select and integrate appropriate cameras, sensors, microcontrollers, and edge computing devices.
Conduct and analyze real-world testing of the system.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
Refine the complete system based on test feedback.
With relevant experience: assist with hardware prototype construction and development.

Plan and organize work packages, milestones, and development phases.
Coordinate technical requirements with project partners.
Manage and synchronize project development tasks.
Prepare, lead, and follow up on project meetings.
Document project progress and create status reports.
Support project leadership with reporting and related documentation.

Required Qualifications

A completed degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent practical qualification.
Strong knowledge in computer vision, image recognition, or object detection techniques.
Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Expertise in training, testing, and optimizing AI models.
Experience assembling and processing image datasets.
Familiarity with large language model APIs or locally hosted language models.
Basic competence with relational or document-oriented databases.
Understanding of APIs, database interfaces, and real-time data handling.
Proven ability to independently plan, coordinate, and document technical projects.
Methodical, dependable, and solutions-focused work approach.
Proficient in German and English at least at C1 level, both written and spoken, due to bilingual project communication and documentation needs.

Additional Advantages

Experience with large language models and modern knowledge architectures like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), GraphRAG, or LLM-Wiki, including preparation and querying of external knowledge bases.
Familiarity with OpenCV and object detection frameworks such as YOLO or equivalents.
Experience with Edge AI deployments on devices like Raspberry Pi or NVIDIA Jetson.
Knowledge of React framework for front-end development.
Skills in backend technologies including Python, Django, or Node.js.
Experience with Linux, Docker, and Git.
Knowledge of industrial camera systems and industrial image processing.
Competence in project management tools and methodologies.
Experience in publicly funded research or development projects.
Experience working with cameras, sensors, or microcontrollers.
Skills in soldering, creating simple circuits, or developing basic PCBs.
