Job description
Position Overview
Elmhurst University is seeking part-time faculty members to become part of its dynamic teaching community in First-Year Writing for the fall term of 2026. All first-year writing courses are delivered in computer-assisted writing labs with an enrollment cap of 18 students per class.
Compensation and Location
This is an exempt part-time role. Pay ranges from $3,800 to $4,000 for a standard 1.0 credit (4 semester hour) course, with new adjunct instructors starting at $3,800 at Adjunct Level 1. This position requires in-person presence on campus and is not eligible for remote work.
Responsibilities
- Teach between 1 to 3 sections of Composition I and/or II, including in-person instruction.
- Potentially teach Introduction to Literature (ENG 200), depending on course availability.
- Prepare course materials including syllabus development.
- Conduct student assessments and grading.
- Provide support and availability to students requiring additional help or with questions.
- Contribute to the university's mission, vision, and values.
- Perform other teaching-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of an M.A. in English or an equivalent degree.
- Experience teaching first-year composition or introductory writing courses.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity within the student body and campus community.
- Preferred: Training or background in contemporary rhetoric and composition pedagogy.
- Preferred: Experience teaching undergraduate students.
Working Conditions
The role is predominantly indoor with limited exposure to outdoor conditions and involves sedentary work with extended stationary periods. Essential abilities include effective verbal communication (both in-person and virtual), close and distant vision for reading and screen use, and fine motor skills for repetitive tasks. Occasional lifting or moving items up to 15 pounds may be required. Applicants able to perform these essential functions with or without accommodations will be considered.
