Position Overview

The Utility Janitor role blends janitorial tasks with light facility support and operating camp vehicles. Responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in common areas, offices, and workspaces within the remote camp setups. The position also involves driving utility vehicles to move waste, supplies, and equipment between camp facilities, adhering to strict safety protocols including WHMIS compliance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Ideal candidates have a hospitality background and prior experience working in remote camp environments. This role requires fly-in/fly-out travel from Edmonton, Alberta or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to locations in Nunavut or NWT, with potential delays due to weather and logistical challenges. The role supports a remote camp lifestyle with provided accommodations and amenities.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness of assigned camp areas such as dining halls, recreation rooms, offices, and warehouses.
• Sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and storage spaces; replenish necessary supplies.
• Carry out floor care tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, and buffing floors; clean windows and carpets.
• Gather and dispose of garbage and recyclables using camp vehicles.
• Transport supplies, linens, and equipment safely between camp buildings.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and filters; report major repair issues.
• Ensure compliance with PPE usage, WHMIS standards, and sanitation procedures.
• Assist with special projects, facility security, and locking/unlocking tasks after cleaning.

Candidate Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; hospitality certification is advantageous.
• 1 to 3 years of experience in janitorial or labor roles, preferably in remote camps or hotels, including experience driving in construction zones.
• Valid class 5 driver’s license with clean driving record.
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel and reporting tools.
• WHMIS and relevant safety certifications, or willingness to acquire them before deployment.
• Physically able to meet job demands including lifting and endurance activities.
• Successful completion of drug, alcohol, health and criminal background checks.
• Effective communication skills in English, especially via radio devices.

Physical and Working Conditions

• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull items up to 50 pounds and perform physical activities for extended periods.
• Work in varied indoor and outdoor environments, exposing to different weather conditions and accessing multiple camp areas.
• Handle repetitive tasks and operate cleaning equipment safely.
• Comfortable with 12-hour shifts in a high-paced and repetitive environment.
• Operate vehicles to transport materials and supplies throughout the camp site.
• Responsible for arranging travel to the dispatch point, generally Edmonton.
• Fly-in/fly-out remote assignment with shared accommodations and provided meals.
• Work a rotational schedule (three weeks on, three weeks off) including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Strict adherence to all client and company health, safety, and sanitation procedures.
