Role Overview

The Sorter position at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) involves safely and efficiently operating assigned workstations to meet operational targets. This includes sorting materials on a conveyor line, maintaining quality and productivity standards, and ensuring cleanliness of the work area. The role requires adherence to safety protocols, operation of equipment as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and participation in training and mentoring of other team members. The position involves 8-hour shifts either during the day or evening, with work schedules potentially extending up to 17 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Manage assigned workstation operations to achieve Key Performance Indicators and operational goals.
  • Operate all assigned equipment responsibly, including coverage for other units when required.
  • Notify supervisors proactively about any production shortfalls and participate in improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct routine equipment maintenance checks and maintain cleanliness of the work area.
  • Complete assigned training to achieve competency and seek cross-training opportunities.
  • Perform cleaning duties on screens and conveyors, including working at heights or in confined spaces using hand tools when assigned.
  • Suggest improvements to work methods for supervisor approval.
  • Contribute to developing strategies that boost productivity, reduce downtime, and optimize costs.
  • Train and mentor team members as needed.
  • Support initiatives that promote a constructive and engaging workplace culture.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • No prior experience in sorting or production lines is mandatory but is advantageous.
  • Capability to sort materials on a moving conveyor while meeting performance targets.
  • Strong attention to detail to uphold safety and quality standards.
  • Proficient English communication skills for clear understanding and verbal interaction.
  • Good interpersonal skills for collaborative teamwork.
  • Willingness and ability to work 8-hour day or evening shifts, with personal transportation available, as the facility operates extensively.
  • Ability to wear a respirator in dusty environments as required.
  • Capability to maintain confidentiality compliant with policies and regulations.
  • Must pass pre-employment requirements including drug and alcohol tests, medical exams, and immunizations.

Working Hours & Conditions

  • Shift durations: 8 hours per shift.
  • Day Shift: 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; Evening Shift: 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm.
  • 30-minute unpaid lunch break plus two paid 15-minute rest breaks.
  • Standard weekly hours: 40 hours; annual base: 2,080 hours.
  • Scheduled workdays: Monday through Friday with potential overtime, particularly on Saturdays.
  • Work environment includes recycling plant conditions such as climbing, working at heights, confined spaces, noise, fumes, chemicals, and other industrial hazards.
  • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided.
  • Exposure to moving machinery, electrical risks, and variable temperatures.
  • Physical demands include lifting up to 49 pounds multiple times per shift.
