Internship Overview
This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience analyzing machine data from advanced food sorting systems used worldwide. Joining the Research & Development team, the intern will contribute to the development of next-gen digital tools that convert operational machine data into actionable insights for customers and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Designing and implementing data pipelines to gather and prepare operational telemetry data, from overall system performance metrics to detailed item-level information.
- Managing real-time high-throughput telemetry and event-driven messaging by combining data from various machine sources.
- Transforming and optimizing complex operational data for rapid analytics and search capabilities.
- Developing dashboards and visualizations to aid customers and engineers in understanding machine behavior, detecting issues, and monitoring performance.
- Writing core software logic using Python, C++, and related technologies for data processing, integration, and time-series analysis.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams including software, electronics, and systems engineers to convert hardware events into understandable operational metrics.
Learning Opportunities
- Hands-on experience with modern data architectures including time-series data and distributed search platforms.
- Exposure to Industrial IoT integration, utilizing telemetry from hardware systems across APIs, databases, and message systems.
- Professional development in collaborative software engineering with Git, code reviews, testing, and Agile methodologies.
- In-depth understanding of automated sorting systems and their application in global food production.
- Utilizing operational data to diagnose machine health and improve product quality.
Candidate Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong interest in data visualization, processing, and software development.
- Available for a full-time, 10-week internship running November 2026 through February 2027.
- Willingness to work onsite full-time at TOMRA's R&D center in Auckland, New Zealand.
- Ability to provide academic transcripts and two academic or professional references if shortlisted.
