Job description

About Airways

Airways manages New Zealand's expansive 30 million square kilometers of airspace, delivering critical services such as air traffic control, surveillance, communication, flight inspection, mapping, and airspace design. Our collaborations include government bodies, regulatory authorities, airlines, airports, and the general aviation community to guarantee safe travel for pilots, passengers, and freight. Our core values are Safety, One Airways, Excellence, and Success, which guide all our operations.

Our organization includes operational business groups supported by governance and corporate services. For more insight into our structure and people, our website provides extensive information.

The Team

The Air Traffic Services Development (ATSD) unit is responsible for setting requirements, architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and support of New Zealand’s Air Traffic Management and Aeronautical Information systems that manage New Zealand airspace.

We have developed and continue to maintain the FlightYield™ aeronautical billing system, which is vital to the company’s financial operations.

We create and sustain our own Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems along with supporting systems that feed into these mission- and safety-critical platforms. This demands meticulous attention to detail, systematic development approaches, and continual improvements.

Role Overview

We are expanding our FlightYield team and seek a Software Engineer based full-time at our Christchurch campus. This role involves architecting, designing, developing, testing, documenting, deploying, maintaining, and supporting the live, time-critical FlightYield system, as well as contributing to its eventual replacement lifecycle.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a proactive and motivated software engineer who thrives on solving complex challenges, values teamwork, and enjoys a dynamic office environment.

  • Minimum two years experience in a structured software development team environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Java programming.
  • Expertise with SQL-based databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality designs, code, and documentation efficiently and productively.
  • Capable of adapting to a dynamic business, collaborating effectively, showing resilience and agility, owning tasks, and focusing on delivering successful results.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with Enterprise Java Beans and application server management (e.g., IBM WebSphere, Glassfish).
  • Familiarity with JavaScript frameworks like Angular.
  • Development experience in web applications, APIs, and related technologies.
  • Knowledge of Java Server Faces frameworks such as PrimeFaces.
  • Background in real-time, safety-critical system development.

Employees enjoy five weeks of annual leave, extensive learning and career progression opportunities, and flexibility through a hybrid working model.

You will work on technically demanding and interesting systems, collaborating closely with a dedicated team including air traffic controllers, pilots, system engineers, and network specialists.
