Job Overview
The Sergeant in Institutional Recruitment serves as the leading point person for the recruitment of correctional officers at the institution, managing the hiring process from first applicant engagement through onboarding and training integration.
Core Responsibilities
- Act as the primary recruitment liaison, connecting and educating applicants about the role and recruitment steps.
- Evaluate applications for eligibility, guide candidates through the application procedures, and conduct candidate interviews.
- Coordinate interviews involving senior leadership and manage all pre-employment processes including background checks, testing, and medical clearances.
- Lead new employee orientation, oversee equipment distribution, and facilitate initial shadowing experiences.
- Maintain tracking systems for applicant progression, document recruitment activities, and provide trend reports to departmental leadership.
- Collaborate closely with HR, training staff, and institution leadership to ensure staffing needs are successfully met.
Training Requirement
Successful candidates must complete an eight-week basic training program at the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) Training Academy upon hiring.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma with 18 months of experience in correctional, security, military, or law enforcement roles.
- A bachelor's degree or criminal justice-related degree may replace part or all of the required experience as stipulated.
- Certification by SCDC Training Academy and completion of a basic supervisory course within six months of appointment is mandatory.
