About the Role
Join our team in a vital conservation role located on Rakiura Stewart Island to conduct research on the Critically Endangered Pukunui, also known as the Southern New Zealand Dotterel, during the breeding season.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive field surveys
- Monitor bird populations and nesting activities
- Install nest cameras for observation
- Gather, manage, and input collected data
- Analyze data, summarise findings, and generate reports
- Coordinate and lead field trips
Required Skills and Experience
- Proven backcountry experience including off-track navigation
- Capability to operate independently in remote, exposed environments
- Proficiency in GIS mapping techniques
- Strong skills in report writing and data analysis
- Experience in leading projects or teams
- Knowledge of bird monitoring methods
- Competency in data collection and organisation
- Good physical fitness to carry heavy packs
- Adaptable and excellent interpersonal abilities
Desirable Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary education
- Experience handling and banding birds
Terms and Work Conditions
This full-time, fixed-term position runs from 21 September 2026 through 15 January 2027. The role is primarily based on Rakiura Stewart Island during work periods, where you will stay in small huts and campsites located in exposed, sub-alpine locations. Work is organized on a 10-day on, 4-day off roster. During off-duty days, you may stay at any location, but travel costs to and from the off-duty site are your responsibility. The Department of Conservation provides ferry transportation between Invercargill and Rakiura Stewart Island for scheduled shifts.
Compensation and Benefits
