Role Overview
The Referral Coordinator will help carry out the company’s mission by managing patient referrals between primary care providers, specialists or facilities, and health plans. This role includes checking insurance eligibility, handling referrals, securing authorizations when needed, and locating participating specialists or facilities when required.
In this position, you will act as a communication bridge among patients, providers or facilities, and insurance carriers. The job calls for accurate, timely coordination and strong customer service to improve practice efficiency and patient experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle referrals and authorization requests with accuracy and within expected timeframes.
- Check patient insurance coverage and confirm eligibility for the referred services.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, providers, and insurance representatives.
- Act as the connector between patients and healthcare providers to keep referral workflows moving smoothly.
- Use interpreter support when needed to communicate effectively with diverse patient groups.
- Keep thorough documentation of referral progress and follow-up activity.
- Work alongside clinical and administrative teams to support continuity of care.
- Deliver responsive, professional customer service when answering questions and concerns.
- Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality in line with HIPAA requirements.
- Meet established performance goals.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Strong client-facing communication and service skills.
- Working understanding of managed care, medical terminology, and third-party payers.
- Familiarity with insurance processes, medical office operations, or referral handling.
- Excellent organization and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Comfort using electronic health records and referral tracking systems.
Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
