About the role

Hamilton City Council’s Community Group delivers services that support local life, including Hamilton Pools, Parks and Recreation, Hamilton City Libraries, and the city’s main visitor attractions. The wider aim is to keep Hamilton attractive, lively, connected, and responsive to community needs.

Waterworld Te Rapa is the flagship aquatic facility and includes six pools, such as toddler and outdoor pools, hydroslides, a full gym, land-based and water-based exercise classes, learn-to-swim programmes, and more.

This full-time lifeguard position requires availability to work Sunday through Thursday.

What you’ll do

You will help keep all visitors safe in and around the water while ensuring they enjoy their time at Hamilton Pools. The role also includes educating swimmers about risk prevention and carrying out some light cleaning duties.

Training and qualifications

No prior experience is required if you are a confident swimmer who enjoys working with people. Full training will be provided.

During the role, you will gain the First Aid Level 2 Certificate and the Pool Life Saving Practicing Certificate (PLPC).

Benefits

Hamilton City Council offers development opportunities, two wellbeing days each year, free Unimed health insurance including hospital and surgery cover with discounted family membership rates, free annual health checks and flu vaccinations, the option to buy extra annual leave, reimbursement for eye tests and glasses, and discounts with local businesses such as gyms, cafes, dentists, hairdressers, and others.

Application and selection process

If you want to apply, you can upload your cover letter together with your CV as a single PDF file, or add a message in the Hiring Team text box.

Applications close on 17 July 2026, and shortlisting may begin as applications are received.

Final candidates will go through interviews, reference checks, and a criminal check. If the position is classified as safety sensitive, a pre-employment medical assessment, including drug and alcohol screening, will also be required.

This role is subject to the Children’s Act 2014, so shortlisted applicants must complete all required safety checks before starting work and again during employment.

Hamilton City Council can support applicants with access needs during interviews or assessments if requested in advance.

The council is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to building an inclusive workplace where different perspectives and experiences are respected and valued. Recruitment agencies are not used for unsolicited approaches, and any agency support is only arranged through the council’s selected panel.

Community and values

The council works in partnership with Kiingitanga, Waikato Tainui, mana whenua, and maataa waka within Hamilton Kirikiriroa, and values Kotahitanga by fostering a welcoming environment where everyone belongs.
