Role Overview and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Fire Chief and under the supervision of Deputy or Platoon Chiefs, the Probationary Firefighter will contribute to fire and emergency operations to protect community safety. Responsibilities include:
- Collaborating effectively as part of a professional firefighting team.
- Responding to emergency alarms involving fires, medical incidents, hazardous materials, water and ice rescues, confined space operations, and other crises.
- Performing designated emergency medical interventions during calls.
- Conducting thorough inspections and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment, including post-emergency care and scheduled upkeep.
- Operating departmental vehicles and equipment safely in accordance with regulations and internal policies.
- Participating actively in all required training programs, evaluations after emergency responses, and stress debriefings.
- Successfully completing training modules and promotional exams as necessary.
- Assisting with public safety education initiatives and community special events.
- Maintaining high standards of physical fitness and healthy lifestyle consistent with job demands.
- Undertaking other related tasks assigned by supervisory staff.

Mandatory Qualifications
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- Certification from an accredited Pre-Service Firefighter Training Program OR NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II certification recognized by IFSAC or Pro Board (with certification proof at interview).
- Successful completion of all six Fire Fighter Services of Ontario test components: Candidate Physical Ability Test, Clinical Assessment, Medical Assessment (vision and hearing), Aptitude Exam, Acrophobia Test, Emotional Stability and Resilience Assessment. Applicants undertake testing at own expense.
- Valid swim test certification from an accredited Ontario Fire testing body (testing to be arranged by Town for qualified finalists lacking this certification).
- Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C with AED certification completed within 12 months prior to posting close.
- Valid unrestricted Ontario Class 'D' driver’s license with 'Z' air brake endorsement and a driving record meeting corporate standards.
- Fluent English communication skills, with capability to operate clearly under pressure.
- Capability to perform firefighting and rescue duties requiring teamwork under physically demanding conditions, including sustained, intense physical effort.
- Commitment to maintaining physical and mental fitness for duty.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts covering nights, weekends, and holidays.
Assets and Additional Experience
- Prior physically demanding work experience (e.g., construction, labouring, farming).
- Experience in municipal firefighting, fire prevention, or public education roles.
- Background in emergency services, trades, mechanics, or heavy vehicle operation.
- Advanced EMS First Aid or medical training credentials.
- Swimming certifications such as Bronze Medallion or higher.
- Engagement in community service, charitable or volunteer work.
Recruitment and Selection Process
Applicants must submit complete online applications by 11:59 p.m. August 9, 2026. The process includes credential verification, an in-person panel interview focusing on behavioral and situational competencies, a practical skills assessment demonstrating NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II standards, and conditional job offer contingent on psychological assessment, vulnerable sector check, driver abstract, swim test certification, and reference verification.
Compensation and Work Conditions
- Starting salary of $74,036 per annum in accordance with the current Collective Agreement, with potential to reach $134,499.
