Job description
Role Overview
This position entails the physical handling of packages through loading, unloading, and manual sorting in a secure and efficient manner. The role may rotate across various duties including loader, unloader, palletizer, scanner, weighing and keying (SWAK), quality assurance (AQ), facer, and switcher positions.
Specialized Responsibilities
- Trainer Role: Instructs other package handlers in safe and efficient loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques.
- Air Package Handler: Conducts multi-step inspections to ensure "Air Restricted" parcels are not loaded on aircraft; manages associated documentation.
Key Duties
- Apply manual surface handling techniques for all package movement.
- Load and unload parcels from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading grids.
- Lift, transport, push, and pull packages continuously for 3 to 5 hours per shift with possible multiple daily shifts.
- Identify conveyor systems correctly by scanning, reading labels, checking numbers, and sorting packages accordingly.
- Perform other assigned tasks as needed.
Additional Duties for Specialized Roles
Trainer Responsibilities:
- Train new and current package handlers in efficient handling techniques, including small item handling and SWAK processes.
- Provide feedback on proper package handling methodology.
- Enforce dock safety standards among peers.
- Demonstrate all necessary procedures and processes by example.
- Communicate operational conditions to management to assist in decision-making.
- Assist with implementing new handling procedures and techniques.
- Simultaneously train peers while executing regular PH duties.
Air Package Handler Responsibilities:
- Scan all parcels in the air transport consolidation area; inspect dangerous goods designations.
- Load packages into unit load devices when applicable.
- Complete restricted package return notifications in the SCMS system.
- Engage regularly in package handling activities including lifting and transporting.
Qualifications & Requirements
- No minimum education required.
- No prior experience necessary; however, specialized roles prefer six months’ experience as a package handler within FedEx Express.
- Ability to understand and follow work and safety instructions.
- Proficiency in identifying numeric and written information to sort packages accurately.
- Familiarity with basic equipment such as roller conveyors, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a dynamic team environment.
- Operators of switching equipment must hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) driving record.
- Trainers must be capable of instructing multiple peers simultaneously.
- Air handlers must complete and maintain annual compliance training, including Airlift Consolidation Gateway and government-mandated indirect air carrier certifications.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to extremes in temperature (hot and cold environments).
- Work environment is generally very noisy.
- Must safely handle packages weighing from 5 to 50 pounds.
- No travel required.
- Schedule: Morning shift Monday to Friday, 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
Additional Information
This role requires flexibility to perform all assigned tasks and pass mandatory training programs. Successful candidates must work with PC/Windows systems and maintain annual accreditation renewals as applicable. Schedule adjustments may occur based on operational needs. Residents of Quebec must be bilingual in French and English. Driving positions require a valid license with no more than two infractions or accidents in the prior 24 months. Candidates will be evaluated on driving records, interview performance, and driving skills assessments.
