Operating Theatre Technician (AH)

Job Overview

The Operating Theatre Technician will ensure the surgical environment remains secure, sterile, and efficient for patient safety during procedures.

Primary Duties

• Verify that suction and diathermy devices are clean and functioning properly.
• Inspect operating lights for clarity and ensure proper operation.
• Clean, inspect, and arrange the operating table and related accessories.
• Prepare the operating room for each scheduled procedure.
• Assist with safe patient transfers between trolley and operating table.
• Help position patients appropriately for surgery.
• Support surgeons in applying tourniquets.
• Adjust and focus surgical lighting and aid nursing staff in patient care.
• Conduct daily inventory checks on positioning aids and accessories.
• Clean the operating room quickly between cases, within 15 minutes.
• Remove soiled linens and surgical waste to the disposal area after the next procedure has started or when possible.
• Ensure disposable suction liners are securely capped before disposal into biohazard containers.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness across the operating theatre suite, including operating, prep, scrub, anaesthetic, and sluice rooms on a daily basis.
• Perform terminal cleaning after the surgical list or following infected cases as per protocol.
• Remain available in the operating theatre to assist the surgical team as necessary with tasks like changing suction liners or providing additional equipment.

Secondary Duties

• Maintain cleanliness and organization in the pantry area.
• Transport patients between wards and operating theatre as required.
• Carry out routine weekly cleaning of theatre equipment such as tourniquets and light sources.
• Perform any additional tasks assigned.

Qualifications and Other Requirements

• Completion of the WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support (Operating Theatre Support) or equivalent experience as an Operating Theatre Technician.
• Demonstrates proactiveness and eagerness to learn.
• Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills.
