About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space company providing launch services, spacecraft design and manufacturing, satellite payloads and components. Our mission is to make space more accessible, supporting vital missions in science, Earth monitoring, climate action, defense, and emerging tech demonstrations. The Electron rocket is among the most frequently launched U.S. rockets, having delivered over 230 satellites. We are developing Neutron, a reusable, medium-lift launch vehicle aimed at deploying larger satellite constellations. Our Space Systems division designs satellites and components, supporting NASA missions to the Moon and Mars, and contributing to the James Webb Space Telescope.
Neutron Development Team
The Neutron team brings the new large rocket and its facilities to life, handling design, testing, engine activation, and launch pad setup across the U.S. Joining this team offers the chance to work on a pioneering rocket's first launch.
Role Overview
This role centers around mechanical systems development, requiring an engineering mindset to interpret drawings, plan assembly strategies for complex units, fabricate custom tooling, and swiftly solve problems during the build process. This opportunity suits individuals eager to innovate and engineer solutions rather than merely follow instructions.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze engineering drawings and independently devise assembly approaches for new parts.
- Assemble large structural rocket components through drilling, riveting, and precision mechanical techniques.
- Create custom tools and fixtures using manual machining such as lathe and mill operations when necessary.
- Work extended hours during critical construction and testing periods.
- Frequently travel to U.S. sites (about two weeks every 6-8 weeks) to support integration and testing.
- Identify and troubleshoot technical issues proactively, recommending and implementing solutions.
Required Qualifications
- Strong foundation in mechanical assembly, including nuts and bolts handling.
- Demonstrated hands-on mechanical technical skills.
- Ability to work independently and solve build-related challenges critically.
Desired Skills (Nice to Have)
- Experience with manual machining tools (lathe and mill) for part fabrication.
- Proficiency in TIG welding.
- Background in large structural assembly such as aviation standard drilling and riveting.
- Basic knowledge in electrical wiring and harness termination following diagrams.
- Hands-on experience from engineering graduates comfortable in workshop environments.
- Adaptability to design changes and resilience in maintaining positive team dynamics.
- Prior experience as a technician at Rocket Lab preferred.
Work Culture and Expectations
We aspire to unlock space's potential to enhance life on Earth through innovation, teamwork, perseverance, and commitment. Our team is collaborative, ego-free, and hardworking under deadlines, focusing on solutions rather than obstacles.
