Deadhaus Sonata is an action role-playing game focused heavily on narrative, set within the bleak and shadowy world of Malorum. Players assume the roles of potent undead entities such as Vampires, Liches, and Revenants, created from death itself. The setting is a dark fantasy realm influenced by ancient cosmic powers, political scheming, long-forgotten magic, and an ongoing war between life and death.

Helmed by Denis Dyack, the mind behind acclaimed titles like Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen and Eternal Darkness, Deadhaus Sonata continues a tradition of immersive storytelling, morally ambiguous themes, and richly detailed worlds. The game features deep lore, impactful player decisions, persistent consequences, and over 20 hours of professionally voiced narrative material.

Role Overview

We are growing our narrative team and seeking a skilled Narrative Writer to help develop the characters, history, and gripping stories that bring Malorum to life.

Responsibilities

• Compose high-quality dialogue, combat-related lines, quest narratives, codex entries, and detailed item descriptions, along with environmental storytelling elements.
• Expand and maintain consistent lore within the Deadhaus Sonata universe.
• Create distinctive characters, factions, conflicts, and story arcs tightly woven into the Malorum setting.
• Work alongside narrative designers, game designers, and creative leads to seamlessly integrate narrative content with gameplay.
• Revise story content as needed based on collaborative feedback, preserving the game's dark gothic tone.
• Support branching dialogue structures, player choices, and meaningful consequence-driven narratives.
• Offer creative ideas that enrich the mythology, history, and future narratives of this universe.

Requirements

• Deep-rooted love for video gaming with appreciation for both classic and contemporary titles.
• Strong familiarity with grimdark fantasy genres and related works such as Warhammer, Berserk, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Legacy of Kain.
• Excellent grasp of narrative construction within action RPGs including story flow, timing, and meeting player expectations.
• Professional-level written English skills with exemplary writing, editing, and narrative crafting ability.
• Capacity to create engaging dialogue, memorable characters, and immersive worlds that enhance player experience and gameplay.
• Strong interpersonal communication and ability to collaborate effectively in a remote team environment.
• Open-mindedness to feedback and iterative content refinement within a creative team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior published works including novels, short stories, comics, or video game writing credits.
• Experience contributing narrative to at least one released video game.
• Background writing undead, horror, gothic fantasy, or dark fantasy content.
• Knowledge of mythology, occult customs, tarot, or cosmic horror themes.
• Experience with narrative-driven action RPGs or soulslike titles.
• Skill in writing branching dialogue, nonlinear stories, or player-influenced narratives.
• Familiarity with voice-over production and writing dialogue for performance.
