Job description

Overview

Join the Pathology Specimen Reception team at Frimley Park Hospital in a role critical to processing and recording patient samples accurately, supporting the pathology services that serve hospitals, GPs, and private healthcare providers across a broad region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Blood Sciences team by receiving, sorting, and preparing blood, bodily fluids, and other patient specimens with precision.
  • Label specimens accurately and enter data into the Pathology computer system to maintain a seamless workflow.
  • Perform general laboratory and clerical duties to uphold service quality and efficiency.
  • Maintain communication with team leaders and senior lab staff to minimize errors and ensure timely task completion.
  • Assist with electronic production and distribution of pathology reports, respond to telephone inquiries, and handle authorized test result dissemination.
  • Liaise with external laboratories for tests not conducted onsite and interact with clinical staff regarding sample discrepancies or missing data.
  • Advise specimen collection procedures according to pathology guidelines and provide patient instructions for specific collections such as 24-hour urine samples.
  • Greet laboratory visitors professionally and maintain confidentiality and accuracy in all tasks performed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum GCSEs at grade A* to C (or equivalent) including Mathematics, English Language, and two science subjects.
  • Previous experience working in a pathology specimen reception or similar clinical environment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems such as Winpath and Enterprise.
  • Experience in busy work settings is advantageous.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong typing and keyboard proficiency.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and manage work efficiently.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology is desirable.
  • Excellent communication abilities and a positive, team-oriented mindset.
  • Flexibility with work hours to support service needs.
