Roles and Responsibilities

• Manage incoming marine wildlife incident reports via hotline, email, or partner agencies, assessing strandings, entanglements, injuries, or deaths.
• Coordinate and lead field efforts to secure scenes, establish safety perimeters, conduct safe extraction or deployment of marine animals, provide preliminary care before veterinary arrival, and transport deceased wildlife for necropsy.
• Ensure all response activities comply strictly with the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act.
• Collect detailed field data, photographic documentation, and biological samples; input records accurately into NOAA databases including Level A forms and monk seal data systems.
• Provide logistical support or coordination for necropsies, sample processing, and carcass storage or disposal as necessary.
• Participate in meetings, training sessions, and coordination efforts with NOAA, University of Hawaii, volunteers, and allied agencies.
• Maintain and inventory equipment and supplies, guaranteeing immediate readiness for deployment.
• Engage with the public through educational outreach at community events, classrooms, and informational booths, distributing NOAA-approved materials and addressing community queries.
• Install temporary signage or barriers to protect Hawaiian monk seals during haul-out events, ensuring public safety and minimizing disturbances.
• Prepare and submit regular progress reports to NOAA detailing activities, challenges, and successes.
• Adhere rigidly to NOAA policies regarding confidentiality, data security, and operational deadlines.
• Be prepared for on-call duties across the Hawaiian Islands, including potentially irregular hours and workdays.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
• Proven experience with field operations or logistics in Hawaii, preferably in wildlife, resource management, or marine environments.
• Proficiency in data entry with strong skills in MS Office and Google Suite.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities for technical reporting and public interaction.
• Capability to collect and record precise information under time-sensitive conditions.
• Experience in coordinating or supporting volunteer teams.
• Background in wildlife management or environmental response, especially relevant to Hawaii or comparable contexts.
• Experience in conservation-focused public education or outreach.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and readiness to complete required Government Defensive Driving training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine science, conservation, environmental science, or related fields.
• Prior involvement in marine mammal or sea turtle stranding response, rescue, or necropsy procedures.
• Familiarity with federal natural resource laws such as ESA and MMPA.
• Experience within federal contracts or grants, including financial tracking or administrative duties.
• Able to handle physically demanding and on-call work schedules in challenging field conditions within Hawaii.
• Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and compliance with data security standards.
• Knowledge of NMFS policies and federal financial management and operational planning.
