Role Purpose
The Lighting Technician is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of lighting equipment used in all entertainment areas onboard the ship. The role involves developing a welcoming, guest-centered service atmosphere to ensure guest satisfaction and foster repeat business, thereby supporting company revenue and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, circuit, and focus lighting for designated shows.
- Program lighting consoles during technical rehearsals as assigned.
- Conduct fixture and circuit checks prior to each performance to verify readiness according to company standards.
- Operate both manual and automated lighting systems during live shows.
- Maintain design integrity and performance quality throughout show runs.
- Utilize follow-spotlight equipment as necessary.
- Keep detailed logs of show performances.
- Communicate effectively and timely with Stage Manager and other departments.
- Assist with sound needs for special events and perform minor to moderate lighting equipment repairs.
- Inspect and maintain overhead riggings in entertainment venues onboard.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization in lighting areas adhering to Public Health and Safety regulations.
- Attend all show setups, calls, and meetings punctually.
- Deliver exceptional guest comfort and service following Viking’s STAR Service standards and Public Health Policies.
- Participate daily in team meetings to align operational needs and standards.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and utilize safe lifting techniques.
- Adhere to Viking’s grooming and uniform standards to ensure professional appearance.
- Secure company property, particularly under adverse weather conditions.
- Demonstrate flexibility by working varied shifts and maintaining a positive, professional attitude.
- Stay informed about itinerary ports, shore excursions, and onboard activities.
- Commit to company quality and financial objectives within the Entertainment Department.
- Follow all safety, security, environmental, and public health policies; participate in all mandated training and drills.
- Perform additional duties as directed by Cruise Director, Assistant Cruise Director, Stage Manager, or Audio Designer.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience operating lighting equipment for live events with proficiency in DMX Control Systems and complex wiring; previous shipboard experience is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in technical theater or related field is an advantage.
- Competent in handling machinery, hand tools, and various control consoles such as MARTIN M1 and GrandMa; familiar with LED and automated lighting fixtures, fog machines, laser emitters, spotlights, and strobes.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, kneeling, crouching for extended periods, and climbing ladders and scaffolding.
- Able to safely navigate all theater spaces and catwalks on board.
- Fluent English communication skills, both written and oral.
- Demonstrates flexibility, resilience under pressure, strong team orientation, and a strong work ethic with ability to work independently.
- Preferred strong administrative skills with proficiency in PC-based databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
- Exhibits guest-focused, service-driven attitude with professional appearance and excellent knowledge of health and safety protocols.
Additional Guidelines
Compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures and STAR Service Standards is required. The role mandates adherence to strict grooming and appearance standards, including restrictions on visible tattoos, with exemptions evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Supervision & Reporting
Reports to the Stage Manager and receives instructions from the same. No supervisory responsibility.
