Job description

Role Overview

The Junior Sommelier will be responsible for expertly managing wine service within a luxury hotel setting. Key duties include opening and serving wine and champagne, guiding guests on wine selection based on origin, vintage, and style, and maintaining an updated and accurate wine list and inventory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Open, issue, and serve various bottles of wine and champagne to guests.
  • Address guest inquiries and provide detailed information on wine origin, vintage, and style.
  • Manage and refresh the wine list and the MICROS system records.
  • Recommend wine pairings suited to menu items to enhance guest experience.
  • Participate in wine tastings and cultivate strong vendor relationships.
  • Request procurement of new wines and related products to diversify offerings.
  • Develop, update, and implement wine promotions and incentive programs.
  • Monitor and replenish inventory including wine cellar stock, glassware, and equipment.
  • Train and educate front-of-house staff including servers and bartenders on wine knowledge.
  • Perform vintage and BIN number verification and conduct staff wine tastings for knowledge enhancement.
  • Ensure security of alcohol supplies by properly securing storage areas.
  • Adhere strictly to local and state alcohol service laws and maintain accurate records including spill sheets.

General Duties and Workplace Conduct

  • Comply with all company safety, security policies, and report any accidents or unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain a clean, professional appearance and protect company assets and confidential information.
  • Greet and acknowledge guests warmly, anticipate their needs, and provide exceptional service.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, including telephone etiquette.
  • Build and sustain positive teamwork and help the team achieve shared goals.
  • Uphold high-quality standards and expectations consistently.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including prolonged standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and maneuvering in various environments.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical, trade, or vocational education.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role.
  • No supervisory experience required.
  • No specific licenses or certifications required.
