Job purpose
This role is responsible for overseeing IT infrastructure across HBKU’s distributed datacentres, with a focus on keeping systems performant, available, and secure. The position also covers management of datacentre space, cooling, power, and access, while planning ahead for future scale and growth.
Key responsibilities
- Track, analyze, and fix difficult network and computer system problems.
- Administer datacentre servers, storage platforms, backup systems, networks, and infrastructure applications.
- Work with the network and security teams to keep the datacentre’s internal network structure running smoothly.
- Investigate network issues and resolve performance-related faults.
- Develop solutions for complex integration challenges involving multiple technologies.
- Create improvement plans and drive initiatives to redesign and optimize network architecture.
- Stay current on network administration practices and firmware integration.
- Watch datacentre environmental conditions to make sure servers, routers, and other equipment operate under suitable conditions.
- Carry out system maintenance, including hardware repairs and software or operating system updates.
- Monitor and tune datacentre servers to support efficient operation.
- Coordinate with IT handlers, sales teams, and datacentre managers to create action plans that improve operations.
- Inspect power and cooling systems to confirm they are functioning effectively.
- Arrange datacentre floor space so equipment is placed for simple access and efficient use.
- Handle operational, infrastructure, and hardware incidents within the datacentre.
- Keep a close record of power use, cooling usage, and space consumption.
- Respond to DCIM alerts promptly and treat them as priority items.
- Keep the datacentre clean at all times and review access logs every week.
- Make sure cabling, equipment, racks, and zones are clearly and correctly labelled.
- Maintain and update policies and procedures related to the datacentre.
- Take part in testing activities and oversee racking and stacking work.
- Coach, mentor, train, and support colleagues so they can deliver strong datacentre services.
- Raise job tickets and align implementation stages with the Planning and Logistic specialist.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in a technology-related discipline from an accredited college is required.
- At least 6 to 8 years of relevant experience is needed, ideally in an academic and research application development environment.
- Hands-on experience with Dell servers and storage, Arista network switches, and Sunbird DCIM is expected.
- Practical knowledge of disaster recovery and business continuity planning for datacentres extending to cloud environments is required.
- Experience working with VMware, OpenStack, or a similar platform is needed.
- Exposure to cloud management tools will be considered an advantage.
- Understanding of system design concepts is required.
- Strong written communication skills are necessary for preparing and editing reports and other communications, with the ability to present ideas clearly and concisely.
- Arabic language ability is an added advantage.
- Proficiency with MS Office tools is required.

The role is based in Doha, Qatar and is a full-time, on-site position.
