About Otherside
Otherside is a dynamic creative and media agency focused on driving growth for companies through engaging, whimsical advertising. We collaborate with rapidly expanding SaaS, fintech, and direct-to-consumer brands, including unicorn startups. Our distinctive comedic ads gain massive viral traction, often shared tens of thousands of times, fueling our rapid expansion.
Role Overview
We aim to assemble a creative team skilled at making even mundane products like fitted sheets or AI transcription services entertaining and memorable through humor, including edgy content that resonates widely in social circles. If this sparks creative ideas for you, keep reading.
Key Benefits
- Steady workflow with direct briefs ensuring continuous paid assignments alongside proactive in-house ad projects during client gaps.
- Opportunity to produce high-impact comedy-led video campaigns backed by substantial advertising budgets from brands with revenue in the billions, adding prestigious work to your portfolio.
- Prompt expert feedback from team members with over 15 years of experience each.
- Clear agreement boundaries: additional rounds beyond the agreed scope involve compensation discussions rather than unremunerated favors.
- A culture without unnecessary meetings; your time is focused on writing, engaging in meetings only when it directly improves the output.
Primary Responsibilities
- Craft video ad scripts ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, covering elevated user-generated content, testimonial styles, and brand advertisements.
- Convert full briefs into initial drafts within 24 to 48 hours.
- Develop concepts and script treatments for pitch presentations on tight deadlines (2–3 days), with full briefs provided.
- Write in accordance with prescribed brand voices and references without losing your inherent comedic tone.
- Swiftly revise scripts based on structured feedback, focusing on a single clean round rather than multiple minor edits.
- Occasionally create ancillary content such as case study scripts, social media copy, and campaign taglines.
Creative Style and Expectations
Our approach combines whimsy with commercial effectiveness. Humor serves as the tool to drive client revenue, ensuring repeated partnerships. You'll carefully balance entertaining elements with marketing objectives.
You will manage pacing to retain viewer attention for up to 90 seconds, expertly controlling rhythm, comedic timing, and impactful endings without resorting to clichés.
Specificity is vital; for example, using vivid, concrete descriptions like “Wrestling the corner back on at 3am” rather than generic statements to make benefits and frustrations relatable.
We rely on strict adherence to deadlines and transparent communication regarding timelines, expecting advance notice if delays occur.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrable experience writing scripts for video platforms including paid social, TV commercials, BVOD, or branded content.
- Published comedic work that evidences genuine humor, not just claims in cover letters.
- Portfolio showcasing at least 2–3 solo-written pieces, with clear identification of your contributions.
- Ability to deliver scripts from complete briefs within 24 to 48 hours.
- Transparent pricing presented as day rates or per-script fees.
Preference given to those with e-commerce or DTC industry experience and a willingness to learn performance marketing principles.
Additional advantageous backgrounds include improv, stand-up, or sketch comedy with experience writing for Australian and US markets.
Ideal Traits
You are someone who cherishes the funniest lines that didn’t make it past review and prioritizes product impact over comedic pride, willing to cut your best joke to enhance the ad’s effectiveness.
Application Instructions
Please submit a tailored cover letter explaining why this position suits you specifically at Otherside, along with:
- Your three funniest commercial writing samples authored solely by you.
- A brief commentary on the funniest advertisement you have encountered this year and why it resonated.
- Your expected day rate or per-script fee and your realistic turnaround time for a set of three 30-second scripts.
Every application is reviewed carefully. Generic submissions without specific details will not receive a response.
