Role Overview
The FinOps Engineer will be responsible for promoting financial accountability, optimizing costs, and enhancing operational efficiency within cloud platforms under the Cloud Operations team. This role focuses on ensuring transparency in cloud expenditures and establishing cost-effective resource management while balancing efficiency with engineering flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and implement a detailed FinOps strategy aligning with company objectives.
- Set governance frameworks concerning resource allocation, provisioning, and budgeting approvals.
- Partner with Finance, Product, and Engineering teams to maintain financial clarity and disciplined budgeting.
- Manage relationships with cloud providers and software vendors, ensuring purchase orders and invoicing are processed promptly.
- Develop and deploy an observability platform to track cloud spending and usage.
- Integrate cloud cost-monitoring tools into the software development lifecycle.
- Establish and measure key performance indicators aimed at optimizing cloud costs and efficiency.
- Implement policies for rightsizing instances, provisioning resources appropriately, and removing unused assets.
- Lead automation efforts to improve cost efficiency across cloud environments.
- Educate engineering teams on FinOps best practices and conduct training to raise cost awareness and financial literacy among technical staff.
Required Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated background in FinOps, Cloud Operations, or managing cloud financials.
- Solid knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, including their cost structures.
- Experience with cloud cost management solutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Competence in designing governance policies and automating processes for cost control.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a FinOps Practitioner or equivalently recognized qualification.
- Experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or Cloud Architecture roles.
- Understanding of budgeting and financial procedures in large organizations.
