Job description

Position Overview

This role involves managing emergency communications by receiving and processing calls from the public related to emergencies. Responsibilities include assessing the nature and location of each incident and ensuring the correct radio channels are used for dispatching emergency services. The officer monitors the locations and statuses of approximately 50 or more emergency response units during their shift and operates various computer systems including telephones, radios, and emergency tracking consoles. They input and update critical information such as data on wanted individuals, stolen property, vehicle registrations, and stolen vehicles, and prepare incident reports via an automated system. The position also handles non-emergency calls and coordinates emergency and routine responses with other municipal departments and law enforcement agencies. Additionally, it covers after-hours emergency calls across several departments like Animal Control, Water Utilities, Traffic and Transportation, Streets, and Victim Services. Shifts may be 8 to 12 hours and include weekend and holiday work.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent and possess at least two years of related experience.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), 911 operations, or police-related communication is preferred.
  • Candidates are required to pass a Critical Personnel Selection assessment when requested.
  • Must obtain or already have the TCOLE telecommunications proficiency certificate and relevant state licensure within a specified deadline.
  • Due to access to Criminal Justice Information Systems, a comprehensive background check, polygraph examination, and criminal history evaluation are mandatory.
  • No adult or juvenile criminal convictions beyond a Class B misdemeanor, or any Class B misdemeanor convictions within the past 10 years, are allowed; other convictions may be considered.

Compensation and Additional Information

The position falls under pay grade GG19 with hourly wages ranging from $28.05 to $39.55.
