The Director of Culture is a key leadership position tasked with shaping and elevating the company's culture to align with our Consumer First Formula and Winning Teams strategy. This role partners with different divisions across Home Office, Stores, and Distribution Centers to develop and implement programs that foster an inclusive, high-performing, and associate-centered environment. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Community & Culture, this role is strategic yet practical. It drives enterprise-wide initiatives including Business Resource Group (BRG) strategy and giving programs connecting BRGs with philanthropic efforts, while counseling HR leadership and business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a strategic consultant and expert on culture, inclusion, and belonging, advising senior HR and business leaders on integrating inclusive practices into people processes and daily operations.
- Stay informed on legal considerations, external trends, and best practices, translating these into actionable, business-aligned recommendations.
- Develop and execute an integrated culture and belonging strategy consistent with organizational goals.
- Set vision and enterprise metrics for BRG initiatives, aligning them as talent development, cultural expression, and community connection vehicles.
- Define success measures linked to behavioral changes and associate experiences affecting retention, performance, and brand value.
- Continuously assess organizational cultural health via surveys and metrics, proactively identifying risks and opportunities.
- Ensure alignment between internal culture programs and external storytelling frameworks.
- Create annual program roadmaps connecting cultural initiatives—BRGs, Heritage Months, and key moments—to measurable associate outcomes.
- Lead the design and delivery of culture-related content for internal communications and major events.
- Oversee BRG governance models and ensure inclusive reach across all associate groups (field and corporate).
- Manage external partnerships for giving and community outreach, integrating these into enterprise philanthropic strategies.
- Collaborate with Learning & Development to scale inclusive leadership programs and embed cultural competency across onboarding and team development.
- Equip business leaders with resources and advise HR Business Partners on embedding cultural intelligence into talent reviews and performance management.
- Develop reporting procedures and governance rhythms to inform senior leadership and contribute to external reports.
- Lead and develop the culture team, managing budget, prioritizing initiatives, and fostering shared accountability.
- Promote inclusive culture practices daily by helping leaders model inclusive behaviors and navigate cultural moments thoughtfully.
- Advise on culturally sensitive communications ensuring messages resonate internally and align with external marketing.
- Enhance cultural programming ensuring relevance and inclusion of frontline and corporate associates.
- Facilitate BRGs to provide insights for business decisions that reinforce associate engagement and retention.
Qualifications and Experience
- More than 8 years of progressive experience in culture, employee engagement, or HR leadership, preferably in retail or consumer goods.
- Proven ability to build and scale enterprise-wide culture programs across diverse populations.
- Demonstrated success as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on culture, belonging, and associate experience issues with strong executive presence.
- Expertise in managing Business Resource Groups strategically, including designing governance frameworks and KPIs.
- Experience leading teams and managing direct reports.
- Deep understanding of inclusion, cultural competency, and organizational behavior principles.
- Ability to navigate sensitive cultural and legal topics with balanced business judgment.
- Skilled in formulating multi-year strategies connecting functions and delivering measurable results, including designing and interpreting engagement metrics.
- Excellent program design skills, comfortable operating amid ambiguity.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including executive-level presentation and associate storytelling.
- Bachelor's degree required in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Psychology, or related fields; master's degree preferred in Organizational Leadership or Human Resources.
