Role Overview

The Designer role within Plasman's Windsor Tooling division involves providing customer support through design expertise for both new and ongoing products. This position centers on detailed tooling and mold design, requiring interaction with supervisors, program managers, and customers to ensure design accuracy and functionality.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Engineering Supervisor and Program Manager to review designs and engineering changes.
• Coordinate with welding, CNC, toolmaking, Boring Mill, and EDM departments regarding design adjustments and changes.
• Define parting lines, locking mechanisms, and other tooling components such as slides, lifters, and core pulls.
• Develop preliminary, semi-final, and final design drafts, securing appropriate approvals from supervisors, program managers, and customers at each stage.
• Incorporate part concessions into surface or solid models to enhance tooling conditions as requested.
• Maintain ISO-compliant documentation and ensure proper file translation and distribution to related departments.
• Understand and apply customer standards rigorously.
• Evaluate mold flow, cooling, and warp analyses to optimize tool designs.
• Assess tooling feasibility for new designs and engineering modifications.
• Recognize and address potential part issues such as windage, cooling, wall stock consistency, rib interference, and surface texturing.
• Interpret part drawings and apply knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Perform additional duties as required to support the tooling design process.

Qualifications and Skills

• Preferably experienced with Catia V5 software for design tasks.
• Minimum of three years working experience in tool and mold design environments.
• Post-secondary education in Design, Engineering, Computer Science, or comparable disciplines.
• Strong communication skills capable of explaining design choices and engaging stakeholders effectively.
• Attention to detail paired with a refined aesthetic judgement and usability understanding.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize assignments efficiently in a dynamic setting.
