Role Overview
The Antitrust Division's Economic Analysis Group seeks skilled Data Scientists to work closely with Ph.D. economists addressing complex competition-related investigations and litigations. This role involves processing and analyzing data in diverse formats, including relational databases and unstructured data, to support enforcement efforts that safeguard competitive markets and benefit consumers.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with economists and e-Discovery experts to determine data requirements and preferred delivery formats from external entities.
- Coordinate with economists and attorneys on precise and timely communications regarding data and documentation pertinent to investigations.
- Engage with database specialists and external party representatives to facilitate data acquisition and verification.
- Work alongside the Technology Directorate to optimize data organization for analysis in both local and cloud infrastructures.
- Assist in implementation of system upgrades and new technological capabilities in coordination with economists and IT teams.
- Create clear and informative graphical data presentations using tables, maps, and visual aids tailored for attorneys, economists, and senior leadership.
- Apply statistical methodologies to analyze structured data related to merger investigations, including data cleaning, modeling, simulations, and output summarization.
- Manage large datasets, including spatial information, performing simulations and statistical analyses to support investigative models.
- Develop custom software tools to analyze statistical data and findings effectively.
- Utilize SQL and other relevant tools to curate, clean, and extract investigatory data from external party submissions.
- Implement data analytics languages and platforms such as Python, PySpark, R, SparkR, Databricks, Snowflake, Stata, or SAS in data collection and analysis tasks.
- Employ mapping and geospatial software to visualize complex data.
- Perform additional related duties as required.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully undergo a security screening and possibly a drug test.
- Fulfill the mandatory selective service registration for males born after 1959.
- Mandatory direct deposit for federal salary payments.
- Permanent, full-time, non-supervisory role with a one-year probation period.
- Meet the basic educational requirements of a degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or a closely related field or combination of education and experience.
- At least one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 level involving use of data analytic languages (e.g., SQL, Python, PySpark, R, Stata, SAS) and familiarity organizing data in local and cloud environments for analysis.
- Ideal candidates will have proficiency in mapping software, geospatial modeling, and effective oral and written communication with professionals about databases and documentation.
- Alternative qualifications include a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree or graduate-level education combined with related experience.
